Another Personal Update

Another Personal Update

Hello everyone,

How are you guys doing? After disappearing for around half a year, I am back. I was looking for a new job and finally did get one. Might have to move countries next year, if US decides to kick me out. But, that’s for next year.

Although, sometimes when I reflect back on all this time, I can’t help but feel two extremes. While I count my blessings in the sense that I was able to get a job in this period of uncertainty and volatility in US, I also envy my friends and acquaintances who are in bigger and better companies. “If only I had put more efforts earlier.” “If only I had not been complacent then, I would be in much better place now.”

Anyway, I’m planning to make a comeback with regards to the review spree I started earlier this year. I am also thinking of finally introducing Patreon or ko-fi over here but am still in the planning phase as to what extra content I could offer the regular readers. I couldn’t put ads on my blog anyway since it’s a free plan from WordPress. I am also working on revamping this blog, will update when I am halfway through.

In other news, since I have shifted to New Jersey, it’s so hard to do financial planning in this expensive state. Income taxes are higher and everything is just so expensive, including housing etc. The state is trying to leech off of people earning big bucks in NYC and making poorer people suffer. Just so sad.

And also, as soon as I joined the company, my project manager is leaving. Now this could be considered a double edged sword. Since it’s a small company, either the company ends up shutting down because of lack of good project managers, or I get to take over, instantly boosting my skills. Let’s see where it will go.

Despite everything, I’m loving the part where I can be out of office the whole day, drive to the clients’ site and work there. I don’t like office at all. My screen time also reduces that way. All in all, except the stress that all the good people I could really learn from at the company are leaving and that the salary I’m earning might not be enough due to expenses being increased, I think I am okay for now.

This was a short update and I’ll hopefully see everyone starting next weekend with new reviews.

Till then, stay happy, stay blessed!

What’s up? – Mar 2019 edition

What’s up? – Mar 2019 edition

Damn, it’s been three months already but it still feels weird to be writing “2019” as the year.

March 2019 happens to be a month with 5 Saturdays, so it’s time for a full personal post. One of my dearest readers asked me to elaborate on my observation on influence of peers vs. parents on us and I think I’ll start from there.

It’s actually nothing much and it’s not an absolute conclusion since sample size is very small. Just that, according to yours truly, we tend to listen more to people whom we identify more with. In case of family, it might be siblings more than parents (as happens in my family), in case of friends, it might be 2 years senior more than 10 years senior.

I hadn’t really thought about it much initially, since people tend to tell me time and again how I behave like a parent in general (can’t help it, I have grown up with a lot of kids younger than me apart from my own younger sibling). But the incident 3 weeks back compelled me to look at it from a different perspective and I realized, people do listen to me, they just happen to be my immediate juniors.

Perhaps, because they think that I have gone through/ am going through similar situations as them. More junior people have their immediate seniors to identify with and guide them, I shouldn’t have meddled too much since the beginning. Without going in further details though, I think I learnt an important life lesson.

In other news, I got to talk to founder of a company in anime space 2 weeks back and it was an absolutely delightful experience. Although I consume so much east Asian media, I don’t really get to interact with people from that space (regretfully) apart from fellow watchers of course .

Finally, as an user of a small platform, I got to give my feedback to them about their website and anime in general, so it was great. And I could finally rant that slice of life is so underappreciated as a genre that anime like My Roommate is a Cat would never rank in top 10 for seasonal rankings.

I also got to talk a bit about the piracy issues in India. Trust me people, Indians are ready to buy manga and anime, it’s just out of reach for them right now. It’s obviously easier to buy figurines directly from Japan because no translation or anything is required and there is no margin involved for Indian merchants. Just a small shipping fee and you’re done.

Manga and light novels on the other hand, need to be translated. I don’t really know if English versions are sourced from US or somewhere else, but the prices in India obviously include the transportation costs and profit margins for an Indian seller apart from its original cost. Hence, they seem a bit overpriced to us in general.

I have seen a rise in people actually buying manga. But since they’re so readily available online, and translated to latest chapters even, vs. translated manga volumes being at least 2 volumes behind the Japanese version, people obviously prefer reading them online.

With this, I was doing some calculations and realized, following anime and manga, legally, is a pretty expensive hobby, especially in a country like India. For different series, you gotta subscribe to different services: Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu etc. And then to buy merchandise is another big expense. Thank God for public libraries in US which have some stock of manga at least, if not everything.

I guess March has been a month for many realizations for me. Hmm…. I should write all these down some where.

The last thing to say today is, I started Doctor Prisoner and OMG, I am so hooked. Although I have been hyping the series up for all my k-drama watching friends, I just hope it stays on the course it is now and doesn’t disappoint like other k-dramas which started out strong but went downhill really fast.

Anyway guys, have a happy weekend and hope people in northern hemisphere are enjoying the spring. Bidding goodbye to March….

Edit: Ugh, I was trying to close my post at such a good note. Anyway, was scheduling it for tomorrow but it got published right away for some reason. Enjoy the post one day early. XD

Today’s song: Taeyeon released a new song and although I loved it and MV is super pretty, I couldn’t really listen to it more than 4 times in a loop. But still:

Year 2018: Reflections

Year 2018: Reflections

The year is ending, and it’s time for the reflection post. Well, let’s see.

I wrote only 3 posts this year, so 2018 was bad for my blogging. Damn, gotta work hard on writing.

With respect to anime, I followed 2-3 seasonal anime each season but as I have mentioned before, I didn’t get to marathon many. In fact, I didn’t watch my favorites much this year either, no barakamon, no bakuman, no haikyuu, and no natsume yuujinchou.

Please my interest, wake up!!

Barakamon reminds me, I finally was able to catch up to the English releases of the manga, thanks to my local public library. Shout out to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. It’s my favorite place to hang out with myself.

Haikyuu reminds me that they announced season 4 for fall 2019 today in Jump Festa. Finally. Haikyuu hype, yay!!

Haikyuu ❤

I didn’t read much online manga either this year. But I did read a lot of Chinese webnovels. I have enough material to review some. I am not hoping this time, I will definitely write reviews for the novels I have read so far, including some completely translated ones.

Webtoons are going strong. Although I hate to pay for content which could otherwise be free (dunno how webtoons.com earn their revenue though). But I have been following some webtoons on Tapas as well. Well, they have enough games to let you earn some of their currency and read at least one webtoon for free. So, that is good.

Language learning, not so much however. I started Wanikani again but I am not motivated enough for now because I have forgotten all previously learnt kanji. I had reached level 14, reset it to level 7 to brush up everything without overwhelming myself. Guess I’ll have to start with level 3 again. *Sigh*

What else? Dramas? Nopes, no captivating enough plot I would say. I did watch all those dramas with lawyers and judges and those were good. Nothing else. I am finding dearth of variety shows even. They all feel repetitive. Is it just me or is anyone facing a similar situation?

Please say I am not the only one facing the crisis

Oh yeah, I did start some English series including New Amsterdam. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that I went there not only for the plot but also for the celebrated Indian actor Anupam Kher. He’s been doing great in the show and I am just happy to see him gel well with people and act amazingly well.

My excuse for lack of my presence in the beloved blogging community remains the same, I am still job hunting. Oh yeah, my current company shifted to a new place last week and I am finally out of my college’s campus. A small victory for my company? A very small for me too.

On the personal front, I feel I have grown much in one year, thanks to two friends of mine. Shout out to both of them, I hope to see my buddies soon.

K-pop had been a YG year for me. I fell in love with Big Bang first, then iKon and now I am slowly getting into Winner. As for SM, I haven’t heard anything apart from Red Velvet or Taeyeon this year tbh. JYP would be Twice sometimes, but only some times? I did convert a normie friend of mine to BP’s ardent fan. These days all my conversations with him start with one of us sharing Lisa’s insta posts with each other. XD

Lisa is lou ❤

Books, I read quite a few. I read Dale Carnegie’s books and a lot of job hunting books, but well, it’s a start. I did get into podcasts and Freakonomics has been the absolute best. It was so fun that it also made me read their books.

Wow, this year really flew by. Like I don’t remember half of the days/months. I will make sure to pay more attention to my time in 2019. Other resolutions for 2019? Reviving my dead blog!

Gotta work hard!!

Today’s song: As I said, I have been into Winner lately and Song Mino slayed his solo debut. Presenting Fiance

Holiday Greetings, Farewells, Graduation

Holiday Greetings, Farewells, Graduation

Hello Everyone,

It’s been a long while. It seems like this line has become the tagline of all my recent posts. Anyway, I am finally done with my masters. I am officially a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering. Yay!! It was a tough yet fulfilling one and a half years.

Before I start my general life in 2017 post, happy holidays everyone! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2018! Time flies!!

2017 was an especially hard year for me. I lost a whole lot of friends in the first half of the year. It was an eye-opener but it felt so sad to lose so many people at once. I never, in my life knew, cutting ties with someone was so painful. So, first half of my 2017 went into losing so many friends over a simple incident which was exaggerated beyond normal. Some people left for good and I don’t think I am talking to them ever again. Some came back. I met new amazing people as well. I am thankful for all three groups of people in my life. Everything is an experience, a lesson. But because the preceding event started during this time, I still dream about losing my current friends.

And then I broke my leg during summers. It’s healed now but yeah. That was a hard time for I didn’t have many people around to help me. Those who did, thanks again. I wish 2018 would be better, for me, for everyone 😀

Moving onto happier things, my graduation… I learnt more in 1.5 years than I had learnt in 21 years till my undergrad. Thank you very much for the experience Carnegie Mellon University. I am sad to part from my “friends” friends, yet I am happy for everyone, working hard to chase after their dreams. Cheers, everyone!

And then the discord community. My online friends were a great support for me in my tough times. I could rant to them anytime I wanted without being judged. I mean even if I was, I don’t know them in real life. When there is no pressure of being discovered (of course when stalking gets involved, not that much), you tend to give up your pretense more often than not. Online world is like a double edged sword that way, lol. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I tried experimenting and finally came around to starting a small webcomic. The schedule was a fail as usual but it was based on my otaku tendencies and how my roommates react on my everyday antics. 2 episodes are out and I am trying to work back on it.

Oh, and I also started reading Chinese web novels. There has been a sudden rise in their popularity in recent years and a lot of websites are doing fan translations of the novels. It’s indeed a pleasure to be able to read novels of all those dramas which come out with a season and leave the story hanging in-between. You can read some of the Ding Mo novels (When a Snail Falls in Love, Love Me if You Dare, Memory Lost, etc.) and more on Meraki Translation. There is another website called webnovel.com which has vast selection of Chinese novels and I am loving it plenty.

For language learning, as I have mentioned it before, I had attended quite a few classes in the first half of the year (my spring semester). After I broke my leg in summers, I couldn’t attend the classes anymore so my last string of  connection with the language learning broke and I have been passively in touch with Japanese and Korean via anime and dramas.

I wanted this post to be a short greeting and congratulating everyone on successfully finishing another year but it became as long and I haven’t even included the anime and dramas I watched and novels and webtoons I finished. Up next is reviews again I guess? I was told by one of my readers that they got bored of all the reviews, and fortunately or unfortunately, I have been doing these personal posts since then. XD

Anyway, sorry for my laziness in keeping this blog up!! I hope to see you guys sooner…

I made a Frappuccino!!

I made a Frappuccino!!

Yeah, it’s not an achievement but at this point of time, anything I try and succeed in, seems like one, lol. Also, this is no food blog, so I don’t have a suitable category for this post. I’ll just put this down under “Others”.

So, basically, a friend of mine introduced me to these Starbucks frappuccino. I am no fan of American coffee because Indian coffee recipes taste quite different from coffees here. The Indians usually like their coffees heavy on milk and cream, and hence, I cannot develop the taste of ‘coffee-heavy’ coffee at all, somehow. So, I ended up getting addicted to this delicious drink, which comes in different flavors. By the way, this is no promotional post. And since Starbucks drinks are expensive for a grad student like me, who anyway keeps whining about money, I decided to give it a try a home. This 5 minute drink was much easier (and cheaper ;)) to make and tasted exactly like Iced Mocha in India, I seriously don’t know how a mocha tastes in USA though.

For anyone wanting to know the differences between all these caffeinated drinks, here is a link to help you: Difference between coffee drinks

So, today, after much search for different recipes on the internet, I decided to give it a try. I’ll write the recipe down, you can decide the quantity of each ingredient yourself depending on whether you like coffee, chocolate or sugar more.

Frappuccino
Not the best photography skills, I know. Just know that it tastes the best! Also, reusing the bottle…

Ingredients: Instant coffee, Granulated Sugar, Ice (optional), Chocolate Powder and/or Chocolate Ice-Cream

Here goes:

  1. Take water in a pan, about 1/4th of the bottle shown in the pic, warm it just enough to dissolve instant coffee (Nescafe instant coffee). Cool it for 2 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, add sugar, chocolate powder and chocolate ice-cream to the bottle. Again, the quantities will depend upon what taste you like. I used about 1/2 teaspoon of coffee, 1/2 tablespoon sugar, 1 tablespoon ice-cream and 1 teaspoon chocolate powder. You can also skip one of the chocolate powder or ice-cream. I think chocolate ice-cream gave a creamy texture to my drink, which was good for me. You can even change the flavors of “choco” powder and ice-cream. Try Vanilla, Strawberry, whatever you like!!
  3. Add the cooled instant coffee to the bottle, shake the bottle to mix the ingredients
  4. Fill the rest of the bottle with chilled milk.

Of course, if you have time, it’s always better to blend, to mix the ingredients properly, have crushed ice as an added topping and give it a frothy texture. But the time constrained student I am, this worked wonders for me. This is going to be my daily dose of caffeine from now on!

Side Story: Nothing here. I am so busy that I am not getting time for myself. Between three part time jobs, 3 courses, research and job hunting, it feels more hectic than last semester ;-;

But I am trying to manage. I am definitely not attending language classes this time because, of course, no time. I am still doing Japanese through Duolingo and WaniKani here and there, I miss them most of the days, so yeah, language learning is on halt as of now ;-;

All seems sad, you say. Anything happy, you ask? Hmm… lemme think. I have started going on morning walks because I have bought a new phone and can play PokemonGo easily now. Does that sound happy? Yeah, I need to exercise my broken ankle, and so, apart from going to and fro campus, I go for morning walks now, which is pretty fun.

Anything else? Hmm… I wonder. My apartment is cleaner now, there is no fight of who will clean what. Whoever gets whatever time, we clean! That’s why my whole being is in peace. I guess this is a kind of happiness?

Oh, by the way, I will keep writing like this, without a set schedule, in future as well since this is school time. I admit, I was never a regular updater but still. I might skip months even this time. Anyway, I am feeling so sleepy right now, pulled another all nighter for another assignment. Gotta have my frappuccino to drive away this sleepiness. Until next time o/

Today’s song: I have no idea why I keep coming to this song again and again but his voice *melting away*

Personal Update – August 2017

Personal Update – August 2017

Hi Everyone,

A regular reader of the blog told me that they wanted a break from all the reviews I have been posting lately and wanted to read what I was up to these days. Honestly, my life has been as boring/ uneventful, as this post’s title.

As I have been lamenting for quite some time, I injured my leg in the first week of June. Actually, more unfortunate events had befallen me during this time period which are not worth mentioning. All in all, my plans to spend my stipend in visiting various places in US were ruined and rather I had to spend my money on hospital bills. I am still getting treatment for it and more illnesses.

I have been taking so many medicines the whole summer and I feel so sluggish these days. I sleep more than 12 hours each day, a blessing for some of course. But for me, it’s bad. I had so many plans to spend my time but I have been wasting time in hospital visits and sleeping. I haven’t even talked to real life people apart from my family for quite some time. I am enjoying this alone time though. No energy wastage, saving my fucks to give to things as well. However, I do want to travel.

But who wants to read the depressing stuff? So, the best thing that happened this summer was I got to spend almost a month at home. So much food!! Another good thing happened was that I got introduced to a variety of Chinese drama. Till now I have only followed K-dramas religiously but now I am actually following C-dramas as well. This has increased my craving to learn Mandarin seriously although I am intentionally not starting it. When I am confident in all the languages I have picked up so far, I’ll concentrate solely on Mandarin for sure! It might be little far ahead in future but Mandarin is definitely  on my list.

In language learning, these days, I have only been doing duolingo, especially for Japanese. It’s not perfect still I am learning a whole lot of new vocab. Shout out to my lab mate and great friend who compelled me to maintain my streak and hence, I have to log into and do lessons at least once a day.

In other news, I have been reading this translated novel of When a Snail Falls in Love. I have been wanting to write such stories. Actually, I did have a whole lot of stuff written in my notebooks but now I was searching for them and I cannot find them. All my original stories are lost.  ;-;

I am still searching for those, I don’t remember where I have put those stories. I have those registers with me but I cannot find the scripts I had written. I don’t know if I tore the pages and hid them somewhere else. I gotta rack my brains and search!! I only remember only one of them and that too just the setting.

Other than that, it’s almost time to return to US. Last sem and big decisions to make including whether to go for a job or PhD. My plans for writing are unstable as usual. I want to draw as well but I am not good enough. If I do ever find and write those stories, I could at least make the character designs, I am confident in that 😀

Also, a friend of mine went to Japan for his internship. I had asked him to get me Shinrei Tantei Yakumo novels, so now I will officially have Japanese Light Novels in possession. I would have loved to translate and post here but it seems there are already official translations available so I won’t be doing that. Translation reminds me I still have a manga chapter to translate since forever but I have no motivation to do it. I would like to finish it before going back though so that I can start my semester without any distractions/ other things in the back of my mind.

So, this was my update for past few months. What are you guys up to? Are your vacations over? Let me know in the comments below.

Today’s Song: I have been following this drama called My Mr. Mermaid. A cute romantic story. And opening and ending are climbing up my list of favorites. Here is the ending song:

Planning to Plan in 2017

Planning to Plan in 2017

I am not one of those who plan their days, weeks and months. Like, I do make a mental note of what to do in the day but I am unable to follow most of it. Even if I do start making to-do lists, that goes on for one week, may be two at max. This time I decided to change it and went for weekly planner.

Best part is, I got it for FREE! Yup, that’s right. I went for this one: How Life Unfolds Printable Weekly Planner. At CMU, we get a semester quota of 40$ for printing and I had some amount left at the end of the semester. I decided to print these for 26 weeks. Although, colored prints would’ve looked good I didn’t have enough balance to go for that. Nonetheless, black and white does the same work as colored one, so that’s that.

Anyway, I don’t have one of the written ones with me right now but the one I use looks something like this:

weekly-planner-front
Front

weekly-planner-back
Back

There are other templates on the above link, so you can try out whatever suits your taste.

I generally start with writing my weekly goals down on top of front page. Then for each day, I write my agenda on the left hand side and what I actually did on the right hand side at the end of the day. In back, I use the space for notes to list down the groceries I need to buy and my meal plan based on what is available to me and what groceries I am planning to buy and on which day of the week (since due to meetings and extra classes the day of grocery shopping might change).

As I said earlier, I am quite inconsistent when it comes to to-do lists. That is why I only printed 26 sheets. I already skipped last week because it was the first full week of the semester with my on-campus job and loads of meetings. Now I can settle down and plan my stuff accordingly. When I am able to accomplish what I set for the day, the sense of achievement is heavenly.

Not that I am not procrastinating. I definitely am. Given the new hectic schedule, many things are going on back burner. I need to gear up more.

By the way, when I made my time table for the semester this time, including major stuff which cannot be skipped in any way, like meal prep, classes, sleep, job, I realised I had so much free time to study. I hadn’t really ever counted how much I was wasting out of it. Unsurprisingly, max was going into social media and addiction to my east Asian entertainment (after cutting some of it for meal prep). I decided to use pomodoro technique to keep me on the track. Let’s see for how many days it works.

What are your planning techniques this year?

My Penny Pinching Secrets

My Penny Pinching Secrets

Continuing from my last post I think it’s about time that I write a bit about my finances. I won’t elaborate much but I am glad I am maintaining at about (500 +/- 30)$ per month including rent, utilities and groceries.

As I said last time, I have heard and read many stories where a lot of students couldn’t afford their rent or food. Hence, they would live in shabby places and eat noodles to save on time and money. Honestly speaking, I draw my inspiration from them. I am fortunate to have enough to live in an apartment and eat all my meals everyday. However, I won’t deny that I still live a frugal lifestyle, without spending much on luxuries. But if I do find something which I would regret not buying later, I do go ahead with that purchase. Before I start, I would say that after my rent, phone, internet and electricity bills, I am left with about 80$ a month for groceries and other things.

Now, it is not to say that I cannot ask for more. I definitely can. But, to be honest, loans scare me. Debt is always scary, even if you have a job with you. Also, it doesn’t fit right with me that I ask my parents for money beyond absolute necessity (this is the Indian scenario and parents support their children financially till whenever parents wish). Hence, I try. Keeping my budget under 500 has been difficult. It means less occasional outings whether for food or vacations or just shopping. I did try some things to earn from here and there, since I was a new student and couldn’t really get an on campus job last sem. So, what did I do? Here is a list:

  1. I got my rent reduced because I agreed to live in living room: We are three students sharing a 2 bed 2 bath apartment (sharing an apartment rather than having your own studio apartment is always cheaper). Hence, the third person had to manage with living room. I agreed to live in the living room for a reduction of 50$ per month in my rent. With a separator, it pretty much feels like a room/ private space to me. So, I am happy. For that, your flatmates need to be adjusting though. My flatmate who has a private bath in her room was fine with her rent increasing by 50$ per month, then only I could do this.
    rent-reduced
  2. I signed up for various apps where I could save/ earn money: Ok, so this is bit of a stretch, but I signed up for various grocery cashback apps which give cashback on select grocery items in their catalogs. They are especially useful for people who eat (especially cook) non-veg and have drinks. I haven’t cashed out anything from these apps yet apart from an Amazon Gift card of very small amount from ReceiptPal and 27$ worth check from InboxDollars very recently. I won’t review any of those because there are plenty reviews out there. However, I would list down what all I use:
    1. InboxDollars: This is a survey site where you can earn money doing various activities apart from taking surveys. The thing I like the most about them is their TV section. I put the TV on on the website and keep doing my work. After sometime, it does ask to click a button to confirm if I have been watching the videos, but even if I am not, I can just refresh the page and the playlist of videos starts all over again. (They have put a cap of 50 cents per day recently which is disappointing!)
I recently cashed out a 27$ check from them after three months of joining. That too, because I did not know about the earnings from TV section. Earnings from occasional surveys add up too.
Beware that this is not a place where you can become rich or earn your rent. But it’s enough to make about 30 bucks per two months passively. If you do surveys (which are hard to qualify for, just a heads up) and other stuff actively, you can earn more. People say they have made upto 70$ per month on the site being more active. Well, grad students don’t have that much time.
Right now they’re giving 5$ to any new member who joins. And if you’re interested, you can use my referral as well: InboxDollar Referral
      inboxdollar

    2. Apps like Checkout51, Ibotta, Shopmium, SavingStar: They all are apps which give cashback on groceries you buy. They have new list of items every week and you just have to unlock that particular item and scan your receipt. While Ibotta has many selections, they generally need membership details for the given store and Aldi is not there (the place where I do my major grocery shopping from.)
Checkout51 has number of stores but their variety  in items is dropping down. However, these both would be my go to cashback apps. I haven’t cashed out anything from these yet but it never hurts to get some cents back on your purchase every time passively. One day, they will all add up. Walmart’s Saving Catcher is another option if you do your major shopping from Walmart. I’ll write down the referral codes for these too –
Ibotta: rflsgnl (if you sign up using this code, you earn 10$ and I get 5$).
I still don’t know how coupons work, but if I ever get time, I would like to try those too!
    3. Apps like ReceiptPal, Yaarlo: I particularly like Receiptpal because you get a 1$ increment in Amazon Gift card for each 16 receipts you upload on their app. It can be anything whatever you buy. You read it right! I did sign up for Yaarlo but I am not very happy with its earnings. Nonetheless, nothing goes in snapping a picture or two of your grocery receipts. Another app is ReceiptHog, similar ot ReceiptPal, however they don’t have any space with them and I have been on the waiting list for 3 months already. I won’t really recommend that.
      Referral Code: Yaarlo: 4AUCKPG1667
The only catch here is, none of them is super fast. For some, it might be time consuming to just check out offers too. I check them out on bus or when I am idling around with social media etc. But trust me, when I received that 27$ check on 5th Jan from InboxDollars (I had won a 10$ worth target gift card too earlier), and when I deposited it to my account, I was overjoyed. Seeing that account balance going up always makes one happy.

  3. I stopped eating outside: Not exactly. But yeah, I do my cooking entirely at home. Not only do I save money but my diet restrictions also has something to do with it. I am a vegetarian. I don’t eat eggs even in things like cake etc. but in US even pasta can have egg. Hence, I avoid all outside food whenever I can. A lot of people complain they don’t get time to cook because cooking takes up a lot of time. I have observed that with time, you start taking less and less time in cooking. Also, you can always spend less time on facebook.
Home cooked food is fresh, healthy and cheap (I did some calculations and one meal comes out to be less than a dollar when I cook all the meals in a month by myself). And I will emphasize on healthy. My parents, who have always had healthy food in their youth are struggling in their 40s. I can’t imagine maintaining my body that long given all the junk I have already consumed. I want to keep fit with exercise and good diet. That is also one motivation behind me cooking everyday. I also save time when I make all my meals for the day in the morning. Or may be on Sunday and use them till Tuesday. Whatever arrangement works for you. That one hour affair pays me for the whole day(s). Proper nutrition also means more energy and better concentration.
  4. participated in researches: A lot of colleges are involved in researches where they need help of human subjects. Not talking about experiments on you but just interviewing, aptitude tests kind of thing. Try to find if that happens in your college. Mine has a huge system where various studies are available. They don’t pay much but if doing fun activities for 20 minutes is giving me 10-15 bucks, I am totally up for it.
The mistake I did was, I was too ashamed and egoistic to sign up for them for a meager amount. But when I participated for the first time, I found it to be a relaxing activity. The hospital and another university near me pays as high as 600$ for some studies. Without an SSN, that particular study would have paid me 150$. Not bad for 6 hours of your life. (I didn’t qualify for it though, so that’s that).
  5. Find an on-campus job: Goes without saying. It is the best way to earn money and add something on your resume. Because I did not have one last sem, I tried all of the above to make/ save some extra.

Some more things you can do is to stay away from subscriptions you don’t need. I don’t really watch TV, so I don’t have any netflix or hulu subscription. I use WhatsApp or free video calling apps to call home. Another thing I have heard about is, you can, in general negotiate your monthly bills in US. I have no experience in that at all though. Investment? Well sure, if you can. I don’t have that much money or aptitude to start investing in US yet, but some day soon.

Initial expenditures can blow anyone away. I spent whopping 2000$ in my first one and a half month here. After that, I have been trying to take care of my budget. I did start noting down all my expenditures. Writing down keeps my desire to spend more in check (or checking your account balance frequently 😛). I am not bothered about people saying that I am stingy. Because at the end of the day, I want to be in less and less debt without ruining my health.
I know the feeling of spending my hard earned money without any pressure of loans on me and I would like to achieve that state as soon as possible. Hence, I am not afraid, not concerned of ‘missing out on stuff’ right now. Nor do I forget to reward myself once in a while with good food or something I really wish to buy. I rewarded myself with food from my favorite restaurant very recently on finally landing an on-campus job. These kind of rewards keep me motivated to do better as well.

So, these were some of the things I have been following till now to manage my finances in US. What are your pet peeves?

New Year Greetings and Updates

New Year Greetings and Updates

Oops! I skipped two weekends again? Oh no!

Anyway, a very warm and happy new year to everyone. Another year has passed by and I already did a review of my 2016. However, I do think I wrote that post a bit early as a lot has happened after that. I won’t bore you with those trivial details, but I wrote in the same post that I would tell everyone a bit about how I came to love blogging again.

Some time last year, no wait, it’s 2017 and I am talking about 2015, so last to last year, I started feeling that posting on my blog at one particular fixed time had become a task. I had never heard of post schedulers and my schedule has always been erratic. Sometimes I had so much to write about, other times, nothing at all. For keeping posting schedule on track, I even tried to rope in some of fellow anime watchers and reviewers to do some guest posting on my blog, but they turned out to be exactly like me lol, and the plan failed. In the end, I was just procrastinating. I did it to the point that I would watch 10 shows, begin with the writing process, forget about the post and the show and the unfinished post would remain in my drafts, forever!

This year, after joining CMU, I took a course in Science Technology and Innovation Policy. It was about 8 weeks course (half a semester) and we were asked to write a weekly blog entry in the latter half of the course. We were also supposed to write a weekly journal describing what we learnt in the class that week.

Now most of the people, including me, would say that when something you like doing becomes a necessary task to be done, it becomes boring, you lose motivation to do it. It was the case in here too, but I don’t know why, it actually became fun later. And I decided to take up blogging here again. I posted one or two posts right after my semester got over and I fell down in the trap of k-dramas and anime again. However, I haven’t lost the motivation to write till now.

And, I am yet to discover the reason for that. If I could apply that reason to everything I do, wouldn’t I start enjoying every activity, every task? I hope I will realize that sooner. Till then, I will keep going with sheer determination.

Side Story 1: How did you spend you new year? I spent my new year with running man, and maaaan, it’s so hilarious. The initial episodes are crazy. Finding the subbed episodes is tough of course, but people from respective fandoms of idols guesting on the show have done a great job and I am so thankful to them. I do hope SBS starts officially translating shows like KBS one day so that international fans can enjoy them too. They get to earn through YouTube ads, so why not?

Today’s song: This song has been my solace and motto for quite some time now:

My 2016 In Review

My 2016 In Review

Oops! I realise I have taken too long a break! In the meantime, I have accumulated so much to write about. And I am finally a bit free, like comparably. My semester exams are over and I finally have some time to myself. Not that I wasn’t watching anime or k-dramas before.

Anime updates: For fall anime, as usual, I started with a bunch, dropped quite a few. And hence, I am again remaining withslice of life or sports anime with me: Natsume Yuujinchou, 3-gatsu no lion, Yuri on ice, Haikyuu, Days etc. Haikyuu finished quite early, only 10 episodes, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Days was summer anime, I think. Although many people have been disappointed with the anime, I liked it nonetheless. Yuri on ice is a different one, enjoyable though. Natsume, as usual is the best! I will miss Natsume TT_TT

K-drama updates: I watched quite a few k-dramas this year: DOTS, The K2, W (I loved W by the way. Recommended to a friend as his first k-drama and he fell for the plot as well!! Brought another person to this world, yes!). This time I have picked up Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Goblin. I feel Kim Bok Joo is better than Legend of Blue Sea, it might be my personal preference though. Initial episodes of Legend of Blue Sea were hilarious, but I can’t see where the drama is going now. Whereas, it is easier to relate with Kim Bok Joo. Goblin is utterly hilarious! Tvn and JTBC have made some real gems this year.

Other dramas: In the latter half, I watched quite a few other dramas as well. Love O2O, Virtuous queen of Han Dynasty etc. I don’t remember all the names but for rom-com, love O2O is my recommendation, for now. If I remember any other which I found good, will update the post.

Variety updates: Weekly idol had been my top choice for this year as well. However, I am losing interest in it somehow. I finished whatever English subbed episodes were available for Knowing Bros. I took a bit interest in K-pop star 6 as well. The absolute favorite of mine is however Go Fighting! I started watching it for Lay but the comedy is the best. Highly recommended variety show (I am yet to try running man by the way.)

K-pop updates: Infinite! Infinite! Infinite! Yes, my recent favorite boy band came with an album this year and the title song grew up on me as usual. I got into VIXX as well, courtesy to my sister, and now I am a fan. I don’t really listen to YG groups, but black pink has certainly caught my attention. I like Big Bang’s recent song Fxxk it too. Other than that, Lay and Sistar did a good job. Lay’s ‘monodrama’ has been on my playlist for quite sometime.

Webtoons and Manga Updates: I were to release my translations for some manga but then my college started, and I did not find time to put the text in those blurbs at all. And my sister fried the hard disk of my old laptop, so all my work is gone now :/ Many webtoons ended this year, I dropped almost all of the ones I was reading because updates were really slow. Same with manga. I dropped Dice, Thousand Nine Tails, TAL, City of Dead Sorcerer, Skip Beat, Haikyuu (Damnit! Didn’t know they were these many) I am still waiting for Barakamon updates. I started reading Tsubaki-chou lonely planet, again courtesy to my sister. Another one is Fujiwara-kun no Daitai Tadashii, because I was translating it.

Language Learning Updates: Both of my languages are on hold and whatever I learnt till now went down the drain. The revision is on my agenda right now. I borrowed tons of books from my library for some winter reading, I am going to hoard some more. Let’s get some motivation!!

These are my updates for now. In weather updates, Pitts weather is super erratic. One day, it’s sunny with 15 deg C temperature, next day it’s snowing with -5 deg C temperature. Really weird.

Anyway, I need to get back and do some work so that I can write more tomorrow. I will also update a bit about the courses I took this semester and how I came to love blogging once again. See you all and happy holidays!

And for the customary song in each post, here:

One Theft, One door, 12 Girls, No Police Help, No Owner’s Help, We’re Shit Scared To Even Enter That House

One Theft, One door, 12 Girls, No Police Help, No Owner’s Help, We’re Shit Scared To Even Enter That House

So, this is something which happened last to last Sunday in our PG and it’s a very interesting case if you look at it like that (I don’t know why police is not taking any interest in finding the culprit..) A little background on the structure of PG first. We have four floors in our PG where the ground floor is with the owner, the first and second floors are for the girls and third floor is the terrace, which remains locked all the time except when some girl wishes to use it for clothes drying or something. There is one main gate to enter the house, followed by a balcony and then a wooden entrance to inner livable part of the house which leads to the staircase and entrances to subsequent floors (There is one more  wooden entrance to the main house on the ground floor from the balcony, but it’s not for our use, obviously, coz it opens in the main house). Till that time, no CCTV cameras were installed in the PG.

On Sunday, 6th September 2015, we all were in the mood of waking up by 10:00 a.m. since it was a holiday. As fate would have it, one of our friend on 1st floor, let’s call her A, got really sick. She had to ask for some meds from another friend of ours at around 1:00 a.m., whose room is on 2nd floor, let’s call her B. B’s roommates C and D were with her too. B couldn’t stop worrying about A, so she went to A’s room to check on her at about 1:30 a.m. B decided to stay with A. But C and D didn’t lock their room, so that, if B decides to come back to their room anytime, she wouldn’t disturb their sleep. Everybody slept by 4:00 a.m. in the morning but since A was having severe headache, she slept at 5:30 a.m. A and B locked A’s room before sleeping.

At around 7:20 a.m., D woke up to find her laptop and phone missing. She went with C to ask B if she took her laptop with her to watch movie in the night. Negative. So by 7:30, whole PG was in upheaval because now there were two laptops and one phone missing from a room on 2nd floor. In between 4 and 7:15 who all came in to and went  out of PG? Well, according to the owner, he opened the main door (which leads to staircase) at 6:00 a.m. in his first statement, 6:15 a.m. in 2nd statement, 6:30 a.m. in third statement and 6:50 a.m. in some other statement. In the meantime, a servant entered the PG at 6:50 a.m. to wash the dishes in the kitchen at first floor. During this whole time, the owner says he was sitting in first floor’s balcony in one statement and went to washroom in between for sometime in another statement. A garbage collector also came but he rang the bell and took the garbage in one statement and he rang the bell to ask for money, since it was starting of the month in the second statement. We, 7 girls heard our floor’s bell ring once near 7:00 a.m. but nobody went out to see who the person was (everybody was sleeping, duh!). Some girls also heard the owner saying something about some plumber coming, but we didn’t hear it again from him.

In all the hustle bustle, police came at 9:30 a.m. to repeat only one thing, that this is internal work, either some girl, or the servant. Now, we know that girls are incapable of doing something like this since it’s impossible to take two bags full of laptops and hide them somewhere coz there is no such space in whole of PG. We have minimal space in cupboards and bed boxes and it would definitely be stupid to steal laptops and keep them with oneself.

Nonetheless, our rooms were checked three times. The servant was slapped 2-3 times too (which is, well, normal in India, I think).  It took 3 days to complete FIR process, and the police isn’t talking straightforwardly with the girls (They were pretty straight in telling us that we shouldn’t have any hopes of finding the stuff).

The solution? We have been trying to ask the owner to take at least some responsibility (His 60 years of age does give him benefit of doubt but it still is, no way, wise for a girls’ PG owner to open the only entrance to the house, then go somewhere leaving the gate unguarded, allowing a male servant to work unsupervised and then tell everybody that it was their fault that they kept the door to their rooms unlatched and he has no liability to it) and compensate the girls in some way (The electronics were worth 100k rupees, the bags also contained hard disks each. Imagine the poor girls losing all their data at once).

The police has been no help at all. D has visited police station four times and B twice but to no avail. No dog squad, no fingerprinting. The police visited the house once, only once. The cameras were installed on last Tuesday, after everything had happened although the police came and issued directive to all PGs to have CCTVs in January 2015. The locks on the doors of individual rooms were installed 3rd day after the incident. FIR mentions total cost of stolen goods as 20k rupees (Are you kidding me? Even an illiterate would know that laptops cost more than 30k and here you are evaluating two laptops at total of 20k? Phone and hard disks are nowhere in the scene)

The main questions remain:
1. Where did the plumber disappear from the scene?
2. Why was only room of B, C and D targeted? How did the person know that door of their room is open?
3. Who would take risk of climbing up to 2nd floor whereas the door of owner’s house was also open and he had his laptop and keyboard on the table? It would have been very easy for someone to enter and flee from there, if the culprit was, say, the servant or some outsider.
4. Even if some girl did steal the laptops, how did she manage to smuggle it out of the PG?
5. Why is the owner denying everything, when he is also clearly at fault? We have been sleeping with doors to our rooms unlatched before too, not even a single coin displaced from its place. Now such a big theft has occurred. Does he know something which he is hiding from us?
6. Why didn’t the person steal anything else? Their handbags were lying around too, nothing else was touched.

We tried to confront the owner but he has been avoiding the whole thing by asking, what steps should be taken in the future. The real question to ask is, what if one of C and D had woken up the time the thief entered their room? What if he/she had hurt any of them? What would the owner have done then, that he is avoiding the responsibility now?

The truth? Nobody knows. And I am pretty sure, we’re never going to find out. But we saw the ugly face of this world, people who are supposed to be guarding you are backing out, just to save their fuckin’ asses, when they should be the ones holding responsibility. Not even a shred of guilt….. This is what the previous generation is teaching us, and then we blame the system….

Since the episode has happened, us, the 12 girls are living in fear for their lives. The atmosphere has deteriorated. Right now, we’re scared to leave our rooms unlocked even for seconds. This has become such a huge mess and has impacted each girl mentally, a lot. We aren’t able to eat properly, sleep properly. And there is no body to turn to for help…..

PS: I know this is a petty issue compared to other things happening around the world, but I just felt like writing this to sort out my thoughts on this and seek advice, if any reader of this post knows what can be done about this whole incident, one being us, the girls leaving the PG (even though we know the things stolen can’t be anyway retrieved).

36 Things I Have Learnt From Life

36 Things I Have Learnt From Life

Because I agree with “most” of the points. Great read!

Read Stuff With Me

Growing up is a journey, a never-ending one. Yet, we learn something on every step of life. These things are like the revelations that existence kicks us with and those lessons that shape us, help us mature and give us an insight into the mystery of living. What I have learnt from life all these years may not be very different from what you have already learned or will eventually understand in the coming days, months or years. We all come to terms with the bitter-truths and the sweet-nothings of life. Below is a significant fraction of my set of learning:

  1. If you really want to do something, you can. There’s a reason they say: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
  2. Every person is fighting a battle. Life is never easy for anyone. Any one at all.
  3. Do not judge people. Understand them. And if you can’t understand them…
