What’s up? – Mar 2019 edition

Damn, it’s been three months already but it still feels weird to be writing “2019” as the year.

March 2019 happens to be a month with 5 Saturdays, so it’s time for a full personal post. One of my dearest readers asked me to elaborate on my observation on influence of peers vs. parents on us and I think I’ll start from there.

It’s actually nothing much and it’s not an absolute conclusion since sample size is very small. Just that, according to yours truly, we tend to listen more to people whom we identify more with. In case of family, it might be siblings more than parents (as happens in my family), in case of friends, it might be 2 years senior more than 10 years senior.

I hadn’t really thought about it much initially, since people tend to tell me time and again how I behave like a parent in general (can’t help it, I have grown up with a lot of kids younger than me apart from my own younger sibling). But the incident 3 weeks back compelled me to look at it from a different perspective and I realized, people do listen to me, they just happen to be my immediate juniors.

Perhaps, because they think that I have gone through/ am going through similar situations as them. More junior people have their immediate seniors to identify with and guide them, I shouldn’t have meddled too much since the beginning. Without going in further details though, I think I learnt an important life lesson.

In other news, I got to talk to founder of a company in anime space 2 weeks back and it was an absolutely delightful experience. Although I consume so much east Asian media, I don’t really get to interact with people from that space (regretfully) apart from fellow watchers of course .

Finally, as an user of a small platform, I got to give my feedback to them about their website and anime in general, so it was great. And I could finally rant that slice of life is so underappreciated as a genre that anime like My Roommate is a Cat would never rank in top 10 for seasonal rankings.

I also got to talk a bit about the piracy issues in India. Trust me people, Indians are ready to buy manga and anime, it’s just out of reach for them right now. It’s obviously easier to buy figurines directly from Japan because no translation or anything is required and there is no margin involved for Indian merchants. Just a small shipping fee and you’re done.

Manga and light novels on the other hand, need to be translated. I don’t really know if English versions are sourced from US or somewhere else, but the prices in India obviously include the transportation costs and profit margins for an Indian seller apart from its original cost. Hence, they seem a bit overpriced to us in general.

I have seen a rise in people actually buying manga. But since they’re so readily available online, and translated to latest chapters even, vs. translated manga volumes being at least 2 volumes behind the Japanese version, people obviously prefer reading them online.

With this, I was doing some calculations and realized, following anime and manga, legally, is a pretty expensive hobby, especially in a country like India. For different series, you gotta subscribe to different services: Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu etc. And then to buy merchandise is another big expense. Thank God for public libraries in US which have some stock of manga at least, if not everything.

I guess March has been a month for many realizations for me. Hmm…. I should write all these down some where.

The last thing to say today is, I started Doctor Prisoner and OMG, I am so hooked. Although I have been hyping the series up for all my k-drama watching friends, I just hope it stays on the course it is now and doesn’t disappoint like other k-dramas which started out strong but went downhill really fast.

Anyway guys, have a happy weekend and hope people in northern hemisphere are enjoying the spring. Bidding goodbye to March….

Edit: Ugh, I was trying to close my post at such a good note. Anyway, was scheduling it for tomorrow but it got published right away for some reason. Enjoy the post one day early. XD

Today’s song: Taeyeon released a new song and although I loved it and MV is super pretty, I couldn’t really listen to it more than 4 times in a loop. But still:

K-Variety Review: Bounce Indo (ė‘ź·¼ė‘ź·¼ ģøė„)

K-Variety Review: Bounce Indo (ė‘ź·¼ė‘ź·¼ ģøė„)

One sentence for this show: Hilarious yet as an Indian and k-pop fan, downright embarrassing. Four episodes have been released for this series where some fan is subbing it on youtube, but KBS has started airing it officially on their KBS World YouTube channel with one episode out as of now.

Also known as Fluttering India or Exciting India, Bounce Indo is a variety show where five K-pop idols come to India to “exchange” their culture with ours, to see the scope of bringing k-pop into India. These five celebrities include: Kyuhyun from Super Junior, Suho from EXO, Minho from SHinee, Jonghyun from C.N.Blue and Sunggyu from Infinite.

I was actually looking forward to this, despite knowing that the stars were landing in Mumbai and not Delhi (which is nearer to my home town) because I wanted to see my country from their perspective (I love different point of views) and I wanted to know how would THEYĀ like this relatively unknown place to South Koreans. I was utterly disappointed in the show and the cast as there were many other Indian fans which is evident from all the criticism I have read in articles and comments.

If the Indian K-pop fans are to believe, the Mumbaians weren’t allowed to meet their revered idols. I still don’t get the mentality. First of all, you’re coming in India to promote your culture and then you don’t deem the people, who are already familiar with your culture, worthy of the attention they deserve. In my honest opinion, they could’ve just let the fans meet, take pics and autographs and talk to them, off the camera, may be? One cannot deny the already established fan base existing in India. And how uncontrollable can a crowd of 20 odd people be? Agreed, the fans are, most of the times, a little difficult to manage, but we are talking about justĀ a few.

Moreover, as one of the comments on the official video mentions, there were less preparations on the part of the people coming here. If one isĀ going to survey a placeĀ for potential market, any common person would know to better equip themselves with at least a little cultural knowledge before diving into unknown waters. They needed it more so, becauseĀ this was kind of an official expedition. I might be basing this on just first episode, but one can’t be expecting more from a five day trip after watching the first day.

In the first episode itself, they admit that India is not what they used to study about back in their school time. Also, the fan girl Babu, said that there are like a thousand k-pop lovers in Mumbai itself. I am pretty sure there are, a lot more in whole of India (they probably don’t know or are just underestimating the mightĀ of Indian population šŸ˜‰ ) especially in big cities like Delhi and north Eastern States.

I am not criticizing every thing. Even if it was scripted (which I don’t believe), their acting is, no doubt, funny. The convivial environment they create and the way they bear strangers, who don’t even know them, taking pics with them, hats off! (I do envy Babu,Ā who got to show them the way and click pictures with them). I also appreciate the pain they took, coming to a totally unknown country and trying to indulge in their culture (I would personally love doing that).

The majorĀ complaint is the way they tried to portray their popularity in India giving a somewhat false representation (Honestly, it was not surprising that they didn’t find a single fan on the Gateway of India. But if they had allowed the fans on airport, there might have been chances of them getting to know places where they could find more k-pop lovers. They did seem a little disappointed because no one recognised them here.).

All in all, with most of the comments and articles I have read from Indian fans, I am pretty sure I can safely say that it came as a little repulsive to Indian fans including me. Some things are embarrassing on our part and some on theirs. Even so, I do recommend it to people for the sole purpose of pure entertainment. As a proud Indian, I cannot give a green light to ALL the things shown in the show, but most of them are correct (It might take long posts to correctĀ suchĀ things, which is going to be an excruciatingly painful process, so I would rather stay away fromĀ that. But IF someone has got any questions from the videos, or wants to ask something about India or anything else just out of curiosity, I would definitely answer them. Just post them in comments).

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day – 3

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day – 3

It came to an end yesterday. Oh no! I wanted to have more fun (:_:) But well, every good thing comes to an end sooner or later (like the summers here…….. It’s becoming cold (ā•¹ļ¹ā•¹) ).

So I reached late because I wanted to attend the Part 2 of Character Designing Workshop by Chris Solarski and Daizen Komatsuda san’s talk on Key Animation – Outlook and perspective. I was a little late for the second one.

Someone had asked Komatsuda san about sexual content in anime as he had been showing clips from Kill la Kill all three days, and such things, you can’t show at a place where small children might be present, openly, in India (I could hear giggling and smirking of people, not that young, all the time when that dress changing scene used to come in the clip (*Ā“Īæ`*)=3). Someone had raised this question (before I reached there)

So Komatsuda san blew everybody’s mind (well well, it’s India) when he openly admitted that Kill la Kill is kind of alright because nipple couldn’t be seen. Moreover, in general anime, those kind of parts have to be hidden by light or hair or something else (as can be seen in echhi genre, quite frequently). He finished by saying, that he himself loves to draw people naked, both males and females (A creator’s mind works differently anyway)

Next he invited his listeners to get their portrait drawn by him (and I was sooooo jealous. Me and other people who got his autograph on the first day should have been enough! He had to go out of his way to draw like 100 more! (>.<) Well, yes I am sorry, but I am like that only). During this time, I interviewed one of the members of organizing team from CineDarbaar which I’ll post next.

Next was the part 2 of Chris Solarski. And he started with providing a review what he had taught earlier in part 1 for those who didn’t attend his workshop. He then taught about his character development process. That is something one should go and learn from his book, since I don’t become qualified to post it here or tell anybody. If you really want to know though, I can message you the notes I made out there, if you provide the email id or something in the comments below. But I am pretty sure, they’ll be useless to you anyway.

And then I became a wanderer with no aim because cosplay competition was to be held much much later. And I wasn’t in the mood to attend that (it was going to be late and all too). The last, most awesome thing I came across was this:

Cosplay 1, AnimeCon, New Delhi, 2014

I am sorry to all those who appear in this pic and won’t want it to be published on social platform but I have this as the most decent pic of this cosplay. And this one needs to be commended. This level, these details in India _/\_ Even the movements of this guy were robotic!

Other cosplays were also to be found (This includes pics from 2nd day cosplay too):

And thus, ended a fun filled three day event (Oh wait! I ended my last post like this too…. Hmmm…. Need an alternate ending).

And I went on my way, happily ever after with lots of good memories and stories to tell~ (Nah……)

Ah, yes! I got the perfect ending! After this event, my love and respect for humbleness and down to earth nature of Japanese people and their loyalty towards their nation, has increased hundredfold. My choice of following thisĀ culture was indeed “elite”. I am happy that I am fan of Japan šŸ˜€

Looking forward to AnimeCon next year with great anticipation!

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-2

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-2

Well yeah. Day -2 was actually yesterday, but I got the pics today only so I would be writing about it today. Yesterday I went with my friend, so it was more fun šŸ™‚

We attended the game character designing workshop by Chris Solarski. It was actually part of the two installments, where he told us his process of designing game characters. The workshop was based on his famous book – Drawing Basics andĀ Video Game Art: Classic to Cutting Edge Art Techniques for Winning Video Game Design. Chris actually takes inspiration from and combines techniques of classical arts with technology. Most importantly, he showed us how shapes affect the mentality of people and how cunningly, designers use it everywhere. He also told us the importance of volume while drawing.

Now this workshop was in the real sense a workshop because Chris took us through some exercises where he made us to follow the process he follows. We were provided with the sketch books, pencils, erasers and sharpeners sponsored by Pro Helvetia (Liasion office of the Swiss Arts Council in India). It was a good experience to go through the steps a pro follows.

Umm…. ok. This workshop went on longer than expected, so we kind of, missed a lot of talks. After this one, we directly attended theĀ Panel Discussion on Future of Anime, Manga and Video Games business in India by Jiro Ishii san, Hiroaki Matsuura san and Mihara Ryotaro sanĀ which I have discussed in my earlier post. Other than this, we mostly went around buying manga and other merchandise again and awwing over the freebies I got with my Otaku Fan pass for the convention.

In the end, we attended the workshop by MEGA where he gave a talk over his history with illustrations and designing. It was quite similar to what he had presented in his workshop before.

Thus, came to an end, another fun filled day with a lot of lessons and a lot of inspiration from great people.

P.S.: I am going to post about the 3rd day tomorrow. With that, I have got a little interview I did with one of the member of organizers’ team which I’ll be posting very soon (otherwise I’ll forget what all she said, coz even after jotting down a lot of things remain in mind only). And also, a post is coming on what all anime fans who were in Delhi but didn’t go,Ā missed out there and what could be better. Seems this week is busy after all!

Discussion: Future of Anime and Video Games in India – Key Takeaways

Discussion: Future of Anime and Video Games in India – Key Takeaways

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-2. There was an interesting panel discussion by Jiro Ishii san, the game designer and director of acclaimed games like 999,Ā 428: In a Blockaded Shibuya etc.; Hiroaki Matsuura san, the President; and CEO of Sanzigen and Mihara Ryotaro san,Ā Senior Visiting Researcher of Keio Research Institute at SFC and Lecturer of School of Global Japanese Studies at Meiji University on the future of Japanese Anime and Video Games in India.

The discussion went on for about anĀ hour, where Matsuura san basically discussed his expectations of India and his future plans, Ishii san told about his thoughts as a Japanese and MiharaĀ san shared his perspective on general trend of anime, manga and video games throughout the world. It was supposed to be more business related but ultimately it came to general discussion.

Key Takeaways from the discussion are as follows:

1. According to MiharaĀ san, Internet has a huge impact over anime and manga business. Since there is a lot of piracy and all, merchandising things is one of the ways to reduce the piracy and increase business.

2. Matsuura sanĀ said that he is very open minded about business practices in various countries and understands that there would be cultural and other differences everywhere. He is also very interested in knowing the animation practices from India (I so wish I had known about it) and other countries.

3.Ā Ā Matsuura san also shared that he has been in talks with US animation companies for doing collaborations in future. US companies are also investing in the Japanese anime business. He also wished that Indians would also come forward toĀ invest in anime ventures.

4. On being asked about less popularity of visual novel games outside Japan, Jiro Ishii san mentioned the cost and difficulty in translating the text to English as the main reasons.

5. On future projects to cater western audience specifically, Ishii san told that he is always trying to level up, working hard in making the content universal. According to him, gaming is already a globalized concept. He is also of the opinion that Indian landscape is close to the landscape of Japan (Yay!) 20-30 years back (Ouch! It hurts! But it’s not incorrect either…..)

Audience was also given a chance to ask questions from the panel.

1. Jiro Ishii san was asked if the Under The Dog would be able break the recent recycling of concepts ofĀ anime. He said that this project was a deliberate effort, so that the superficial team might beat the “army”.

2. On being asked about the lack of Live Actions (Ok, I am pretty sure, the guy who asked the question, didn’t watch Japanese dramas), Jiro Ishii san stated the big success of recent Rurouni Kenshin movie. He also said that many manga and anime fans are entering the film and drama industry, so there has been an increase in live action projects in last couple of years. He also showed concerns about publishers from famous manga publishing houses and magazines like Shueisha and Shounen Jump not being very enthusiastic about live action adaptations of manga they publish.

3. On the major question of 3D animes in the future, Matsuura san said that there is lot of potential out there forĀ 3D, but 2D and 3D are nothing more than tools. In near future, 3D might be dominating the anime industry though.

In final comments, Mihara san expressed his pleasure to be present there and he also showed curiosity about the future of anime and manga in India. Matsuura san requested everybody to buy authentic merchandise than pirated ones. He said that he would like to see if Indians are willing to buy their products and ifĀ India provides a good market for their stuff or not.

In the end Ishii san called every fan of anime, manga and video games a “Cultural Elite” (a little jokingly) because we chose to follow Japanese culture. He also said that he would work hard to take everything at global level but it’s up to us, the cultural elites as well, to help them.

In summary, they all were very positive about the future of anime, manga and video games in India, but they did show their apprehensions about people switching to buy the authentic stuff.

PS – I’ll post the pics and reviews of 2nd day in my next post. I had jotted down the key points from this talk, so I had to share this with everyone in a separate post (^_^)

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-1

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-1

Yes, yes, yes!! Another anime festival, this time in India itself, that too New Delhi! And I got to meet some real legends there! I was waiting for this day from, I don’t know how much time. And day 1 itself was successfulĀ ļ¼ˆā—ļ¼¾oļ¼¾ā—ļ¼‰

The day started with two sweaty guys in scorching heat, wrapping entry bands to the wrists of excited people (Ok, that was…….unexpected).

Inside, the preparations were still going on and the workshops got delayed a little.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The first workshop was a talk by popular illustrator from France – MEGA. He is such a sweet guy. The two lessons he taught us through his experiences are – Be Passionate and Be Humble. Also, one can easily tell from the content of a speaker, how much research has the personĀ done, and man, to keep his audience engaged, he took Indian examples. Might be that Sachin Tendulkar is famous across the world, but anyway, his talk was entertaining.

On the top of that, he critiqued all the people’s work there. Not once he discouraged anyone. He is probably going to be busy tomorrow giving advice again to the works of people. He didn’t hesitate to provide his gmail address too. I am gonna add him on g+. And Gosh! There are so many talented people out there (not that I didn’t know that before)

MEGA, AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi

So where was I? Yeah, next workshop was works of Daizen Komatsuda himself. We were basically shown a clip of Kill la Kill and then how storyboard is drawn, how parts are animated from keyframes and all. He started by saying a few words in Hindi!! Interesting session! Then came questions and answers. I went to take autograph, but before that, Mr. Jiro Ishii caught my eyes.

Jiro Ishii san @ AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi

I was asked by a friend of mine to get his autograph too. Thank God, I did some research beforehand. He asked me if I really knew who he was and I shouldn’t take his autograph but Mr. Daizen Komatsuda’s. I did, for once give up and went to the line where people were standing to ask Ā Daizen Komatsuda san questions. But I again went to him. He again asked, “Me?”, this time in English. (I died of cuteness overload there (āœ–ā€æāœ–)) Then he questionedĀ me if I knew his the most famous game. He signed it accordingly. And then photo! Yay!

As jolly as Jiro Ishii san looked,Ā Daizen Komatsuda san seemed to be as conservative. I wish I knew who the third person was with them, I would’ve taken his autograph too. They were taking our pics in their cams too. Hope theyĀ keep mine one forever. Somehow, I was the first person to ask for the sign of everybody there. Daizen Komatsuda san started drawing my characterĀ with his pen. For the first 15 seconds I couldn’t even make what he was doing. But then people around startedĀ praising him and all and I got to know what he was actually doing. Then we took photos and yes, I bought a lot of manga for my friends.

Daizen Komatsuda san @ AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi

In the end, before I left, the last talk I attended was on very intriguing topic – Garo magazine by Dr. Ryan Holmberg. This one needs some elaboration actually. Dr. Ryan talked about Garo’s birth and recent demise and touched upon the history of manga, especially the ones which were more related to life in Japan and such.

Dr. Ryan Holmberg @ AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi

The whole environment is good and the volunteers are very helpful. Indian animecon hasn’t grown to that level yet that there are a lot of stalls or a lot of things related to Japanese culture are there. But for a person who has never seen a manga in real life (read: most of the Indian manga fans before the introduction of translated manga by e-tailers recently), it is indeed a heaven of three days.

I was actually expecting a little more in terms of food and all, but given that they’re organizing it for the fifth time only, and I haven’t attended the last ones and The tickets are pretty reasonable and the guests, (I don’t think, you can get a better lot than that. It’s a huge achievement!), I don’t want to complain. There are still two days left, so hopefully, it improves a bit.

With that, looking forward to next two days……….

PS – Ok, I just realized that the pics are too big in size. For now, please bear with me. I’ll upload the smaller print as soon as possible.

Travel: The Beautiful Hill Station in the Scorching Heat: Shimla

Travel: The Beautiful Hill Station in the Scorching Heat: Shimla

So, I’ve just returned from a two days weekend vacation in Shimla and it was a great relief from the high temperatures at my place (though we’re back here and there is no sign of rains (<_>))

I brought some pics:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As beautiful as the valleys were, the roads were as curvy. Even a normal person, who doesn’t get motion sickness shouldn’t eat anything before travelling on these roads. Rest is awesome!

I forget a lot of things (including my camera’s charger with zero battery! Yup, that’s me (#ļ¼ć€‚ļ¼¼#)). So I had to use my phone’s not so good cam. Best thing on the whole trip was visiting Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. Awesome building and very rich history associated with it. Not to mention 100,000+ books in their library (*Ā¬*)). The design of the building and intricacy are totally fascinating!

From Thailand to Pilani – Last thoughts on Thailand

From Thailand to Pilani – Last thoughts on Thailand

Hi all,

I am back to Pilani where my college BITS is situated because placement season has started here. I still am in love with the life I had for the past six months and it’s hard to adjust back here. Not to mention the chilling winters.

I know I said I would update on my several last trips in Thailand and I indeed had fun in mountains there. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are really cool places to visit. But I really didn’t get any time to even update my Erawan Waterfalls post after 4th level which I said I would update that very day.

So I’m here to reminisce about my last week in Thailand – 9th to 15th Dec and my recent life. I with my friends came back from Chiang Mai on 9th morning. Went straight to office and slept a little in the office itself. My friend had the leverage to take a leave so she did that.

10th was a holiday so I went to Bangkok all alone. But my fate, I had less money than I thought left with me so I had to come back earlier than I had planned. But I wanted to buy gifts for people. I could only buy chopsticks for some Japanese enthusiasts in my college. Damn! I should’ve asked for money on monday itself.

Rest four days went into last parties with everyone and farewells to us. Enjoyed a lot. Thais are really fun and caring as well as carefree people. I learnt a lot from those around me. They know how to enjoy life. Indians are a bit lacking in that. I was fearing if I would be able to reach India considering the protests going on but everything went on smoothly (except the excess luggage I had to pay for and then my worst experience at IGI International Airport, India but well, that’s not Thailand)

I would just say I had time of my life there and it’s the best thing that could happen to me in my college life. One must surely go to Thailand and enjoy life there. I generally don’t get attached to people or places but this experience really is unforgettable. I will rest my main post here for now. Many photos are to come in one-two days (Since I am jobless right now. Chemical companies, where are you? TT_TT) but I can’t promise anything either.

Side Story 1: I had prepared gifts for people there. I wanted to do more but since I got my stipend second last day, I had to go for old style wooden photo frames and company color printed photos. The people whom I gave them to did seem touched by the gifts and I got Korean chopsticks from one very dear couple as a return gift. Now I own the things directly from Japan and South Korea. Very happiieeee!!!!

My Korean Chopsticks
My Korean Chopsticks

Side Story 2: I had my first job interview yesterday. At least I was comfortable and did not shake in between. I would still say I am lacking in my technical knowledge and I really won’t deny that fact. If I had technical knowledge, I would’ve got better grades. But how do I tell people that I love learning by doing? Those textbooks don’t appeal to me, what attracts me are the real life equipments. Sigh!

Before everything else, I need to update my previous post. So much work >.<

Above are some of the things which were kind of very amusing to me. India has variety of fruits but the fruits of Thailand are very different and tasty. And you can get the already cut and packed fruits very cheap. The best part, you can eat them coz they look hygienic.

About Christmas tree, yes I haven’t seen those big trees in India. You may find small ones and I don’t know the trend now but there, the Christmas spirit is much greater than here.

Food is really delicious too. At least I didn’t have to see people savoring them before me considering I am veg. They had veg food for me too šŸ™‚ Ah! So hungry! Gotta go and grab something…..

Finally….

Finally….

Finally, the audit has ended. And I got a compensatory leave today because I had been working hard and even spent last sunday at office as I told in this post. So, I’m enjoying and I’ve slept for whole day till now.

In India, a 10 day festival called ‘Navratri’ has started. During this time, people worship different ‘avatars’ of Goddess Durga and young girls in real life. The diet becomes strict too – no onions, garlic etc. Many people keep fast ranging from one day to all nine days. The tenth day is celebrated as Dussehra.

But since I’m in Thailand, leave food for fast, I can’t have onionless food too. And thus I learn of one more compromising situation. Well I should be thankful that I’m at least getting Indian veg food.

But I’m happy that I can start with my studies now.

Today’s song –

After one of the workers at company told me she went to Big Bang’s concert yesterday, only this song is coming to my mind. I’m not a big Big Bang fan. I have never liked their songs but both the recent singles by GD and Seungri were catchy. Added them to my playlist.

15 Days, 3 Months, 20 Years

15 Days, 3 Months, 20 Years

Hello all,

How have you been? Got confused with the title? I was just summing up my life in and out of my country (physically šŸ˜›), nothing else.I reached India some two weeks ago after three months in Thailand. I have fallen in love with that country and my experience there. 20+ years in India and three months in Thailand feel soo….. different. Although, many a times I fail to notice that I’m in a foreign country. Everything is fast in Thailand, yet the pace of life is slow.

I’m not saying anything against India. It is the country in which I was born. How can I do that? Anyways, it is time to go back to Thailand and I am anticipating new adventures for the next two and half months. Thailand has given me a lot. I started taking Korean seriously. I’m already learning a lot in the company. And the most important, it gave me a direction. Now I know what I want to do and how I want to do. Earlier, I was very worried.

Also, these 15 days showed me a quick trailer of how my life is going to be when I come back to India in December for good. Ah! I’m going to miss everyone and everything a lot (you will surely find the same line in some random post after three months).

In the end, I would update you with what is currently going on in my life regarding my language learning and other stuff. I have been listening to random K-pop songs again. I did Korean for whole day yesterday and realized, the grammar is as tough as Hindi’s. A lot of things BUT a lot of similarities. So I’m kind of happy about it. I’m being asked to take a test which I don’t want to but nonetheless I will have to apply for it. I want to take another exam but for my parents, it is kind of secondary, so they are asking me to take both, but first one is mandatory (Sigh!). I have been trying various Korean-English and vice versa dictionary appsĀ for the past few days with much disappointment. Because I want an offline dictionary so that even if I don’t have internet access (which happens sometimes), I may still check out the word meanings.

Sometime ago, I connected my social accounts with the blog and I forget to uncheck some of the boxes like for Facebook and LinkedIn, while sharing. Last time I forgot and they got shared. And I don’t know how many of my friends saw this. It’s good on one side but I would’ve been happy if they didn’t get to see through Facebook TT_TT .

Oh! I remembered, today Good Doctor’s next episode would have been released. I’m off to watch that! Which K-Dramas are you following?

PS – Since I am going back now, I will update the blog regularly (preferably on daily basis), so stay tuned!

Today’s song –Ā

My First Korean Experience

My First Korean Experience

As I wrote in my last post, I went to KoreaTown which was a disappointing experience. There is more to what I mentioned last time.

Actually, I have this senior at the adjacent company to the one in which I’m working, who went to South Korea for his post PhD. And he had to leave in between because he couldn’t adjust to their culture. Now that he knows I’m inclined towards the place, he keeps telling me stories about his experience. Initially I used to think that may be, maybe it was just the culture gap. I have seen enough dramas to make out that people are very strict towards work and are very competitive (I hope I’m right). Because, you can’t dismiss everything in k-dramas or any dramas of the world, as a matter of fact, as pure fiction. You can learn a lot about the culture and many a times, general behaviour of the public (saying that by experience šŸ˜›). So, I tell him that he must be unlucky to find only such people.

But guess, I was wrong. I met this group yesterday. Two older men and one young girl (may not be as young as I think her to be). They were speaking Korean and I got all excited to see native people from South Korea. Now, I had read in some very interesting book that if you meet some native person of the language you are learning, try to gain as much as possible from them. Though I’m very shy to approach strangers like this, even so, I did-

Me – Umm…..Are you from South Korea?

Lady – Yeah

Me – Hi, I’m from India and I’m very big fan of Korean Culture……

Lady (Interrupting) – Yeah, but you see I’ve to go. I’ve got some company.

Me (Taken aback, don’t know what to say) – Oh, ok. Just wanted to say that I’m very excited to listen to real Korean. Thanks. Bye.

She walks away laughing and telling the uncles about this. I couldn’t hear anything further nor did I want to. I had to go in same direction because I wanted to go to JapanTown too. But I was so shocked that I went to opposite direction, crossed the road for no reason and went to a small book shop in hope to find some Korean books. There also, found only Korean to Thai books.

Ah! My attempt failed. It, kind of put me off. I was thinking of taking admission in some good South Korean university for my higher studies. But now, subconsciously or not, this place will probably go to last country in my list of countries where I was thinking of applying (I will still apply though coz I want to have first hand experience of the culture).

After that, I heard a lot of people talking in Korean and Japanese (which, trust me, has never happened before), but I couldn’t gather enough courage to stop and talk to anyone. I’m not saying that everyone is like that. I haven’t known any real Korean people (I mean personally, I do want to though) and I’m not trying to disregard anyone. I know one or two people can’t represent the whole country. But you are a foreigner here and I’m too. I get it that there are a lot of K-pop fans in Thailand and that’s why there happen a lot of concerts. But at least stop for a moment to listen to me, even if you are in hurry. Am I wrong in expecting that much?

I just know that if some stranger approaches me or tells me that they loved my country when they went there (even though they found a lot of bad things too), I feel so proud and give them a big smile and thank you.Ā Am I overthinking over this whole incident? What do you think?

I just hope that this doesn’t happen again……

On Independence and Freedom

On Independence and Freedom

Yesterday, someone asked me, which country shares Independence Day with ours. Oh! I so forgot, itā€™s none other than South Korea. Also, I came across this article somewhere, asking people for the reason of celebrating such a day after long 67 years. Is it to remember that we were once under colonial rule of Britain? Why do we need to remember such thing? Why donā€™t we forget it and try to do some real work towards real independence of our country from evils in the society or pressing issues in the country (Yup, I think that was it. Not sure, if I read something else…… coz you know, more than half of the times I’m spaced out, just like now).

That made me wonder, what this ā€œreal independenceā€ means? If you think of freedom, does that only mean freedom from other peopleā€™s rule or freedom to do anything on your own? Is that even possible? Aren’t we the ones, who are driven not by our desires or needs but what people around us think of us and want from us? And itā€™s not like, we can live without that. It is what is driving our lives. There are so many vicious circles in every walk of our life tying us to one thing or other.

Oxford dictionary defines freedom as ā€œthe power or right to act, speak, or think as one wantsā€. Can we really do that given the nature of society and human beings? Right from the beginning of our lives till the end, we are not free and never can be. It may as well be a relative term. Someone may have more strictness around him/her regarding some things than his/her best friend. That means he/she has less freedom. Thatā€™s it! But it wonā€™t be like the best friend doesn’t have any restrictions on him/her.

Not only outside, inside ourselves too. But that goes more on spiritual and deep philosophical note which is not my cup of tea. Ā I’m only good at pondering on such things. It is difficult to express, so Iā€™ll leave that part to you.

On the last note, Happy Independence Day to citizens of India, South Korea, Bahrain and Republic of the Congo, though my question still remains unanswered and I’m still not sure about what have I written above. Also, just to clarify, I’m not hating anything or anybody here, just saying. It applies for human beings in general and I’m included too!
