Anime Reco: Mahjong Legend Akagi: The Genius Who Descended Into the Darkness (闘牌伝説アカギ 闇に舞い降りた天才)

Akagi

Long ass title, took half of my screen. Anyway, I thought really hard about what anime to review this time. I wanted to do something other than slice of life and youkai and ghosts and spirits. While racking my brain, I realized you can take everything out of me but slice of life.

I actually had to look at my MAL list to see if there was something else. And I found this. This anime is something I have been trying to make people watch. The manga is by same author as that of famous gambling manga called Kaiji. Unfortunately, while a lot of people know about Kaiji, very few people know Akagi.

Akagi is about our OP thirteen year old protagonist who doesn’t even fear death if he can get better bet out of it. The anime starts with a small fry called Nangou losing huge sums of monies at a mahjong parlor to the mafia. Of course, he wants to get back his money at least, but he keeps losing. Enters Akagi, running away from police who’re after him in another gambling case. In the last ditch effort, Nangou gives his turn to Akagi and realizes that he has found a genius who’s going to become a legend in the game of gambling.

He doesn’t look like 13 years old but whatever

I wouldn’t want to compare this anime with Kaiji but since both are written by the same person, I can’t help it. For the anime, there is no that weird “zawa zawa” sound in the back as in Kaiji. And the anime ends in one season with 26 episodes.

Animation will definitely put some people off. It took me some time to adjust with the characters and animation. Those exaggeratedly pointed chins are not my cup of tea. But cannot complain coz the mangaka makes all their characters like that.

Also, the anime is old (2005-2006), so the video quality you might find right now might not be as good. And, it is intense. Also, note that it’s rated R – 17+. There is quite some profanity and violence in there.

If you can move past all this, there lies a gem. As I said, the lead is just too OP, unafraid in the face of death. He would gamble even his life away just for kicks. Of course, I don’t endorse gambling myself.

Do not fear, Akagi is here

But I did get so much confidence in myself for some reason after watching the anime. I think I should watch it again. You realize that absolute confidence in yourself (not empty narcissism just to be clear) makes other people falter before you. And I love these types of anime for that. One outs is another one but that’s for some later post.

Oh, the OSTs. Well, the OP’s mellow tone doesn’t really suit the anime but the lyrics are so philosophical and suit the anime well. Oh the irony in one sentence. The ED is definitely better.

You’ll also get to learn the real mahjong. Not the tile matching game we play on our PCs, but the one you see old ladies playing in K and C dramas.

Conclusion: This anime is definitely not for kids. Watch at your own risk. But enjoyment and plot and suspense and thrill and everything else is 100 out of 100. The ending is very satisfying too.

Final Feelings: ¡¡¡( •̀ ᴗ •́ )و!!!

Personal Front: I am sorry guys, I am out on this weekend and couldn’t really prepare much. So, if you spot some mistake or grammatical error, please do not fret (and leave me here all alone TT_TT).

Anyway, I am happy that I am going out with my friends, but I am pretty sure the weather is not going to favor us much. I would definitely like to use this chance to collect myself. And work harder after I come back. I hope things work out for me.

Oh btw, did I tell you guys this? I received my t-shirts and hoodie from the company? I did say I would do a separate post but doesn’t look like it. Anyway, they’re just company’s t-shirts and not anime merchandise. That was disappointing. On the other hand, they’re so soft and comfortable OMG. I am glad to get them after all. Definitely high quality stuff.

What’s up? – Mar 2019 edition

What’s up? – Mar 2019 edition

Damn, it’s been three months already but it still feels weird to be writing “2019” as the year.

March 2019 happens to be a month with 5 Saturdays, so it’s time for a full personal post. One of my dearest readers asked me to elaborate on my observation on influence of peers vs. parents on us and I think I’ll start from there.

It’s actually nothing much and it’s not an absolute conclusion since sample size is very small. Just that, according to yours truly, we tend to listen more to people whom we identify more with. In case of family, it might be siblings more than parents (as happens in my family), in case of friends, it might be 2 years senior more than 10 years senior.

I hadn’t really thought about it much initially, since people tend to tell me time and again how I behave like a parent in general (can’t help it, I have grown up with a lot of kids younger than me apart from my own younger sibling). But the incident 3 weeks back compelled me to look at it from a different perspective and I realized, people do listen to me, they just happen to be my immediate juniors.

Perhaps, because they think that I have gone through/ am going through similar situations as them. More junior people have their immediate seniors to identify with and guide them, I shouldn’t have meddled too much since the beginning. Without going in further details though, I think I learnt an important life lesson.

In other news, I got to talk to founder of a company in anime space 2 weeks back and it was an absolutely delightful experience. Although I consume so much east Asian media, I don’t really get to interact with people from that space (regretfully) apart from fellow watchers of course .

Finally, as an user of a small platform, I got to give my feedback to them about their website and anime in general, so it was great. And I could finally rant that slice of life is so underappreciated as a genre that anime like My Roommate is a Cat would never rank in top 10 for seasonal rankings.

I also got to talk a bit about the piracy issues in India. Trust me people, Indians are ready to buy manga and anime, it’s just out of reach for them right now. It’s obviously easier to buy figurines directly from Japan because no translation or anything is required and there is no margin involved for Indian merchants. Just a small shipping fee and you’re done.

Manga and light novels on the other hand, need to be translated. I don’t really know if English versions are sourced from US or somewhere else, but the prices in India obviously include the transportation costs and profit margins for an Indian seller apart from its original cost. Hence, they seem a bit overpriced to us in general.

I have seen a rise in people actually buying manga. But since they’re so readily available online, and translated to latest chapters even, vs. translated manga volumes being at least 2 volumes behind the Japanese version, people obviously prefer reading them online.

With this, I was doing some calculations and realized, following anime and manga, legally, is a pretty expensive hobby, especially in a country like India. For different series, you gotta subscribe to different services: Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu etc. And then to buy merchandise is another big expense. Thank God for public libraries in US which have some stock of manga at least, if not everything.

I guess March has been a month for many realizations for me. Hmm…. I should write all these down some where.

The last thing to say today is, I started Doctor Prisoner and OMG, I am so hooked. Although I have been hyping the series up for all my k-drama watching friends, I just hope it stays on the course it is now and doesn’t disappoint like other k-dramas which started out strong but went downhill really fast.

Anyway guys, have a happy weekend and hope people in northern hemisphere are enjoying the spring. Bidding goodbye to March….

Edit: Ugh, I was trying to close my post at such a good note. Anyway, was scheduling it for tomorrow but it got published right away for some reason. Enjoy the post one day early. XD

Today’s song: Taeyeon released a new song and although I loved it and MV is super pretty, I couldn’t really listen to it more than 4 times in a loop. But still:

Anime Reco: Chouyaku Hyakkuninisshu Uta Koi (超訳百人一首 うた恋い)

Anime Reco: Chouyaku Hyakkuninisshu Uta Koi (超訳百人一首 うた恋い)

Oh God! I started this post in 2014. Can you imagine? It’s a five year old post basically. Never got to complete it!

I am pretty sure it’s just another anime which never found the fame it deserves. Why? Of course because it’s a slice of life anime. Like I seriously don’t understand why that whole genre is so underappreciated. Please someone, solve this mystery for me.

Anyway, who wants a Japanese history lesson? Chouyaku Hyakkuninisshu Uta Koi, also called as Uta Koi, is a fun spin on the famous Japanese Hundred Poems (Hyakunin Ishhu) which are used for the famous Japanese card game Karuta. If you don’t recognize the name of the game, think the anime Chihayafuru.

Uta Koi 5
Is what Fujiwara no Teika said

And do you know who this anime features? The different poets of some of these 100 poems and the one who created the anthology – Fujiwara no Teika. Fujiwara no Teika tells the stories behind the poems, who wrote them, in what context and how.

Interestingly, they have chosen only the love poems for the anime (uta koi). But the hilarious take on these stories, especially our narrator Fujiwara no Teika makes the anime very lighthearted. Now that I am writing the review, I feel like watching it again. It might give me a new perspective on the anime and brush up my memory a bit, before I finish this review. Be right back.

All right, I am back after the first marathon of 2019. It was nice to refresh my memory of the anime. So, yeah. I love its OSTs. The opening and ending sounded so nice after so long. Passionate, Fiery, Historical.

Some people might be put off by the animation. It is inconsistent, the characters have very thick outer lines and when the characters walk, you can see that it’s the pattern of their clothes that moves rather than the character itself perhaps. So, people who have grown up watching the advanced development in current animation scenario, might not appreciate it that much.

But if you can overlook that part, this anime has much to offer. Apart from history lessons and the comedy, there are of course small heart breaking and lovely romance stories. Not to mention the wallpaper worthy backgrounds.

Gotta write a poem now!

I personally dig historical stuff, so I am going to totally recommend this anime to anyone and everyone. But I still reckon that this anime might be more for a seasoned anime watcher rather than newbies although I watched it in my 2nd year of anime watching and have had it in my hard drive since then.

Conclusion: I give this anime 11/10 just for the sounds and the comic history. I wish all my history lessons were this hilarious. Highly recommended for my readers. I actually picked up the translated version of the Pillow Book in my undergrad after I finished watching this anime. But that could just be me.

Final feelings: Σ>―(〃°ω°〃)♡→

Personal Front: This week I celebrated my birthday and I had my two friends drive to Pittsburgh from far far away. These are the two friends whom I have given a shout out many times before on my blog. But I especially want to thank them this time. I can’t express anymore how much I love and cherish them. Words fall short when I want to tell them that. I just wish all the happiness in the world for my two buddies. ❤

Apart from that, I and my roommates went to an expensive restaurant to celebrate my birthday. The food was amazing though. Overall, this week had been full of fun and sleepless nights lol. I am using this weekend to finally complete my sleep so that I can recharge myself.

I also bade farewell to a lovely junior of mine yesterday. She’s shifting to California and was the last person I knew from my department. Seems like all my personal connections from my department at CMU are gone far away now. How I wish I could leave the city too. But I am actually very excited for the work I am doing currently. So, all is well. 😀

Today’s song: What to do, what to do, what to do indeed? An anime club friend of mine got me addicted to this LOONA’s newly released song. I got goosebumps the first time I saw the MV. Here it is:

My 2016 In Review

My 2016 In Review

Oops! I realise I have taken too long a break! In the meantime, I have accumulated so much to write about. And I am finally a bit free, like comparably. My semester exams are over and I finally have some time to myself. Not that I wasn’t watching anime or k-dramas before.

Anime updates: For fall anime, as usual, I started with a bunch, dropped quite a few. And hence, I am again remaining withslice of life or sports anime with me: Natsume Yuujinchou, 3-gatsu no lion, Yuri on ice, Haikyuu, Days etc. Haikyuu finished quite early, only 10 episodes, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Days was summer anime, I think. Although many people have been disappointed with the anime, I liked it nonetheless. Yuri on ice is a different one, enjoyable though. Natsume, as usual is the best! I will miss Natsume TT_TT

K-drama updates: I watched quite a few k-dramas this year: DOTS, The K2, W (I loved W by the way. Recommended to a friend as his first k-drama and he fell for the plot as well!! Brought another person to this world, yes!). This time I have picked up Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and Goblin. I feel Kim Bok Joo is better than Legend of Blue Sea, it might be my personal preference though. Initial episodes of Legend of Blue Sea were hilarious, but I can’t see where the drama is going now. Whereas, it is easier to relate with Kim Bok Joo. Goblin is utterly hilarious! Tvn and JTBC have made some real gems this year.

Other dramas: In the latter half, I watched quite a few other dramas as well. Love O2O, Virtuous queen of Han Dynasty etc. I don’t remember all the names but for rom-com, love O2O is my recommendation, for now. If I remember any other which I found good, will update the post.

Variety updates: Weekly idol had been my top choice for this year as well. However, I am losing interest in it somehow. I finished whatever English subbed episodes were available for Knowing Bros. I took a bit interest in K-pop star 6 as well. The absolute favorite of mine is however Go Fighting! I started watching it for Lay but the comedy is the best. Highly recommended variety show (I am yet to try running man by the way.)

K-pop updates: Infinite! Infinite! Infinite! Yes, my recent favorite boy band came with an album this year and the title song grew up on me as usual. I got into VIXX as well, courtesy to my sister, and now I am a fan. I don’t really listen to YG groups, but black pink has certainly caught my attention. I like Big Bang’s recent song Fxxk it too. Other than that, Lay and Sistar did a good job. Lay’s ‘monodrama’ has been on my playlist for quite sometime.

Webtoons and Manga Updates: I were to release my translations for some manga but then my college started, and I did not find time to put the text in those blurbs at all. And my sister fried the hard disk of my old laptop, so all my work is gone now :/ Many webtoons ended this year, I dropped almost all of the ones I was reading because updates were really slow. Same with manga. I dropped Dice, Thousand Nine Tails, TAL, City of Dead Sorcerer, Skip Beat, Haikyuu (Damnit! Didn’t know they were these many) I am still waiting for Barakamon updates. I started reading Tsubaki-chou lonely planet, again courtesy to my sister. Another one is Fujiwara-kun no Daitai Tadashii, because I was translating it.

Language Learning Updates: Both of my languages are on hold and whatever I learnt till now went down the drain. The revision is on my agenda right now. I borrowed tons of books from my library for some winter reading, I am going to hoard some more. Let’s get some motivation!!

These are my updates for now. In weather updates, Pitts weather is super erratic. One day, it’s sunny with 15 deg C temperature, next day it’s snowing with -5 deg C temperature. Really weird.

Anyway, I need to get back and do some work so that I can write more tomorrow. I will also update a bit about the courses I took this semester and how I came to love blogging once again. See you all and happy holidays!

And for the customary song in each post, here:

Anime Recommendation: Gingitsune (ぎんぎつね)

Anime Recommendation: Gingitsune (ぎんぎつね)

I am a biiiiiig slice of life fan. Ah! If they hadn’t been there, what would have I done in my life. Apart from hilarious k-variety shows like Weekly Idol,  slice of life anime are my go-to when I feel down. (I am pretty sure, most of the upcoming reviews are gonna be slice of life)

Gingitsune

And again, as I said in my last post, this particular genre is quite underrated. People new to anime, either think of it as an anime or dismiss it as something mundane or unwatchable. Hence, some awesome shows go unnoticed and unappreciated. One such gem is this show called Gingitsune.

Plot: Makoto Saeki’s mother died when she was four years old. She inherits a power from her mom called “the sight” which enables her to see shrine spirits. One such spirit is Gintaro, who has been guardian of their shrine. After her mother’s death, her father takes up the job of shrine priest and thus, her life starts with this fox spirit. The story begins with Makoto entering the middle school. It’s about her daily life with new friends, both human and shrine spirits and how she evolves as a human being (the common theme).

Gingitsune 2
To here

There are some loose ends here and there which could’ve developed more. But you can’t expect much in 12 episodes. Even so, the speciality of slice of life anime is that they end at pretty okay point where you don’t really feel the need to know more. Pretty self-contained they are.

Animation: Animation and character designs are pretty good. Many consider the designing style of the shrine heralds quite unique. But frankly speaking, I like the human characters more. The main character Gintaro is sometimes shown with unusually big hands or clumsy tail and such. But all in all, it’s pretty good. Not to mentions the backgrounds. They just melt my heart and feel so peaceful. (I keep adding these to my desktop wallpaper slideshow)Gingitsune 5Gingitsune 4

Gingitsune 3
Gimme peace!

Characters: Makoto’s character is quite likable. Being a motherless child, she has her flaws. But growing up with her loving, at times silly, but almost always intelligent father, she is really caring towards others. Also, she strives to strike a balance between the heralds and human beings.

Whereas, Gintaro is the mature and experienced fox, who guards Makoto and loves her very much. He tries to be hard on her to teach her about life, but can’t bear her tears, hence has to concede most of the times. He is the most knowledgeable but acts childish every so often.

There is such contrast of personalities in almost all the characters in the anime which is quite enjoyable, seeing the two opposite sides in one human being.

Gingitsune 7

Other characters are introduced one by one, slowly, which is, again, a plus point. The quiet, know-it-all yet lacking in knowledge of everyday behaviour Kamio Satoru; the old in age but kid at heart Kamio shrine herald, Haru; arrogant yet kind Yumi Ikegami and the one who makes a 180 degree reversal in her behaviour, Hiwako Funabashi are some of the characters who make Makoto’s friend circle and the plot of the anime.

Other things: Soundtracks are pretty relaxing and go well with the anime. I really love the opening and the ending. And as usual, the anime is full of feels (I know, I know. My choices are good, at least, when it comes to anime)

Summary: All in all, I’ll score it a 9/10. And my final verdict is, recommended, not highly, but if you’re looking for slow pace, peaceful story and easy going characters, go for it! And, here we are with the PV next:

PS: This anime season, there are so many slice of life series, and their first episodes so look promising. I am so very excited!!! Will write about them when they finish, but from first impressions, I am going to follow Shounen Maid, Tanaka-kun wa itsumo kedaruge, Anne Happy, Flying Witch and Kuma Miko from Slice of Life list. Some more series are coming up, will add after watching them.

Anime Recommendation: Barakamon (ばらかもん)

Anime Recommendation: Barakamon (ばらかもん)

Recently, I have been in contact with lots and lots of people, thanks to my higher studies preparation. And this one anime, I have been suggesting to everyone and by everyone, I mean every single person, even those who have only Death Note to their “completed” list. And boy! It has worked wonders!

Wonders for everyone
Wonders for everyone

Before I write the review of this anime, I welcome all the “converts” to the anime world. Hope you stay here for long and discover the charms of this place. Now, let’s get started.

Plot: Handa Seishuu is the 23 years old son of a famous calligrapher and is trying to make a name for himself in the calligraphy world. In an exhibition, he loses control and punches a prominent personality just because the old man critiques his piece a little harshly calling it “too conformist” and “unoriginal”. He’s then, kind of banished, to a small village called Goto island where he is given the title of Sensei.

Barakamon: The fateful punch
 The fateful punch! Ouch!

How this city boy adapts to the village life, comes out of his slump, finds his inspiration and succeeds is the plot of the anime. It’s about the daily life of Seishuu and his interactions with the villagers and how they knowingly or unknowingly help him see the world from a different perspective.

Now, it’s a 4-koma gag kind of thing, not exactly like that though. Most of the episodes contain two stories but the plot still flows, so you can’t randomly pick any episode like Nichijou or Azumanga Daioh. There are only 12 episodes and it ends on a great note.

Barakamon: The feeling at the end
The feeling at the end

Characters: Since, the plot is about how Seishuu evolves into a kind hearted, original human being from an arrogant and narcissist calligrapher, there is no doubt, his character sees the most development. He also shows the most emotions and brings about different reactions from the audiences at different points of time: He’s disgusting when he punches the director, lovable when he decides to be Naru’s guardian in secret, pitiful when he loses a prestigious competition to a guy much younger than him and…… Shhhh…… won’t give any more spoilers.

Barakamon: Funny Hiiro's mom
Yes, he does!

The other main character of the series is Kotoishi Naru, a seven year old girl, who lives with her grandpa in the village and has made her base in Seishuu’s house to be, with her other friends. She is the person who sticks to him like glue and turns every situation into hilarious one. The most comic part of the series. Also, she’s supposed to be the lonely child in the absence of her parents and her grandpa always at work, hence she spends the time with her friends and Seishuu. She actually puts efforts to appease him  and is the only one who has the might to handle the moody Sensei. And her voice actress has done a fabulous job.

Oh, that little hint
Oh, that little hint! *Makes a mental note*

The other recurring characters are the kids around Naru: Hina the best friend, Tama and Miwa the middle schoolers, Hiiro the high schooler, and other kids from Naru’s school; the old villagers: Naru’s grandpa, the shop manager, village chief, etc. etc.; Sensei’s family and friends: Kawafuji the art dealer, Mom, Dad, Hall director the punched man, are a few from the list. Many a times, giving importance to these many characters in an anime spoils the broth. But the blend created here is just something magical. (I understand that I am praising the series a little too highly, but when a series still makes you laugh, even after watching it for 20 times, either there is something wrong with you or the series is a gem. The feedback I have got for this one, even from the people who run away from anime, shows it to be the latter case, though I won’t deny the former one.)

Animation: Not very clean but not very messy either. The type of drawings used for this one go well with the theme of the anime. And,

Barakamon: Let's just not forget about the beautiful scenaries
Let’s just not forget about the beautiful scenes

Other things: Soundtracks are plain entertaining. Full of feels too. And it has that calming effect, which can only be felt if you actually watch it. Might be inspiring for some as well, because, it’s all about finding yourself and friendships.

Summary: This anime has got the most simplistic and realistic settings but pulls the job of entertaining the people incredibly with right emotions at right time, so much that people forget about the hi-fi anime they have watched, if any. The pleasing to eyes animation and awesome soundtracks in the background complement it so well, that if I am to score it, I would give it 100 out of 10 (yup, you read that right). And for those who find themselves in depression, try it just once. Take from me, you won’t be disappointed.

If yer making gloom fumes too
If yer makin’ gloom fumes too

Barakamon: Just leave it to this anime
Just leave it to this anime

Now that I read the whole write-up, I think, I have praised it a little too much. But you know, it deserves it. A lot of anime lovers haven’t watched it yet which amuses as well as worries me a lot. When otakus around me say that they haven’t watched the series, my reaction is always

Barakamon: What
What!

And I realize, despite high ratings on MAL, it might be one of the most underrated anime in the real life. It’s just an observation though. So if you haven’t watched it yet, please do. The anime is available on YouTube as well, English subbed. Here is a trailer for ya:

Enjoy!

Anime Review: Kyoukai no Kanata (境界の彼方)

Anime Review: Kyoukai no Kanata (境界の彼方)

Damn! I had so many reviews written down with me. This one was written in 2014! Let’s just get started….

Literally translating to Beyond the Boundaries, this 12 episode anime is, what you call it, a little different from the league but at the same time, it contains everything a mainstream anime has – romance, action, drama, evil sisters, mysterious outsider, demons, humans, immortals, hidden motives, fetish driven perverts and so on.

From above, one might get an idea that it’s not lacking in anything but to be honest, I felt the story a little rushed and jumbled. I don’t know about the light novels though. Throughout the anime, I had the following feels as well:

Kyoukai No Kanata Mirai
I can watch it! I can watch it!

Plot – Going to the story, Akihito Kanbara is an immortal half demon half human who is obsessed with girls with glasses. When he sees one on the top of his school’s roof, he goes to save her, and instead gets stabbed (That was totally weird imo). The bespectacled beauty, as he calls the girl, Mirai Kuriyama is a demon hunter who is from a cursed clan which used to use blood manipulation. She uses her blood to form her sword but is afraid to face the demons or dreamshades as they call them in the anime.

Kyoukai No Kanata Getting Stabbed
                                            Ouch!

Being the selfless guy, Akihito helps her in overcoming her past and fears and make friends. In the due course the real nature of the half shade residing in Akihito comes out as well the hidden motives of Nases, the governing family of spirits and spirit hunters in the area and the Spirit Hunters’ Association.

Ah, yes, the spirit hunters. They are the people who have special powers to see and kill the shades and they earn money through them. In the end it is revealed that shades are nothing but manifestations of negative emotions of human beings. (Well, well, no surprises there, it’s been shown in a looot of series after all)

Since the setting is high school, there is no doubt that there’re powerful side characters as well. But:

Kyoukai No Kanata 1
The mystery….. is still a mystery

Analysis – Ultimately, it is one of those victory of good over evil anime and I am literally tired of writing the same thing. I like that the negative emotions of human beings can give birth to such a thing as demons, this element is my favorite actually though. And the emotions in the anime are far more overwhelming than the real life. So, I don’t remember if I laughed or not, it definitely made me spill my tears a li’l bit.

Kyoukai No Kanata 2
Damn! How do they make this? Such beauty…. It’s making                                            my eyes………

There is an element of women empowerment as well, as you generally don’t see a girl as the one doing the action in such kind of series.

Other things – Art and animation are amazing. Reminds one of Hyouka, Tamako Market and K-on!, if you’ve watched any out of those. It’s Kyoto Animation after all.

Plot, again, okayish, a little confusing and with lots of loose ends, but would do. Hopefully, they did tie them in the subsequent movies, I couldn’t muster up the courage to watch them though. I didn’t want to be disappointed again with the ending and plunge myself into all the drama this anime presents. I mean, it’s okay for one time watch, but I had watched it in 2014. The movies aired in 2015. Including subs and all, it would have been minimum August at least, when I would watch the movie. Sorry, not that much patience. (I did wait for Tamako Market’s movie, checking everyday if the subbed movie had come out or not XD)

Music, suits to the series, no complaints there.

Kyoukai No Kanata Night Scene
I ended up choosing the beautiful scenes after all!

So, here it is. Again it’s a review because I don’t particularly recommend it to everybody. If the elements seem interesting to you or you’re into demons and stuff, then you can definitely take up the series, or you can watch it just for the animation sake, because it’s beautiful, just drop dead gorgeous! (I ended up choosing the sparkly natural scenes rather than characters to insert into the post >.<) All in all, I’ll give this anime 7/10, the plot doesn’t contribute to it though.

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day – 3

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day – 3

It came to an end yesterday. Oh no! I wanted to have more fun (:_:) But well, every good thing comes to an end sooner or later (like the summers here…….. It’s becoming cold (╹﹏╹) ).

So I reached late because I wanted to attend the Part 2 of Character Designing Workshop by Chris Solarski and Daizen Komatsuda san’s talk on Key Animation – Outlook and perspective. I was a little late for the second one.

Someone had asked Komatsuda san about sexual content in anime as he had been showing clips from Kill la Kill all three days, and such things, you can’t show at a place where small children might be present, openly, in India (I could hear giggling and smirking of people, not that young, all the time when that dress changing scene used to come in the clip (*´ο`*)=3). Someone had raised this question (before I reached there)

So Komatsuda san blew everybody’s mind (well well, it’s India) when he openly admitted that Kill la Kill is kind of alright because nipple couldn’t be seen. Moreover, in general anime, those kind of parts have to be hidden by light or hair or something else (as can be seen in echhi genre, quite frequently). He finished by saying, that he himself loves to draw people naked, both males and females (A creator’s mind works differently anyway)

Next he invited his listeners to get their portrait drawn by him (and I was sooooo jealous. Me and other people who got his autograph on the first day should have been enough! He had to go out of his way to draw like 100 more! (>.<) Well, yes I am sorry, but I am like that only). During this time, I interviewed one of the members of organizing team from CineDarbaar which I’ll post next.

Next was the part 2 of Chris Solarski. And he started with providing a review what he had taught earlier in part 1 for those who didn’t attend his workshop. He then taught about his character development process. That is something one should go and learn from his book, since I don’t become qualified to post it here or tell anybody. If you really want to know though, I can message you the notes I made out there, if you provide the email id or something in the comments below. But I am pretty sure, they’ll be useless to you anyway.

And then I became a wanderer with no aim because cosplay competition was to be held much much later. And I wasn’t in the mood to attend that (it was going to be late and all too). The last, most awesome thing I came across was this:

Cosplay 1, AnimeCon, New Delhi, 2014

I am sorry to all those who appear in this pic and won’t want it to be published on social platform but I have this as the most decent pic of this cosplay. And this one needs to be commended. This level, these details in India _/\_ Even the movements of this guy were robotic!

Other cosplays were also to be found (This includes pics from 2nd day cosplay too):

And thus, ended a fun filled three day event (Oh wait! I ended my last post like this too…. Hmmm…. Need an alternate ending).

And I went on my way, happily ever after with lots of good memories and stories to tell~ (Nah……)

Ah, yes! I got the perfect ending! After this event, my love and respect for humbleness and down to earth nature of Japanese people and their loyalty towards their nation, has increased hundredfold. My choice of following this culture was indeed “elite”. I am happy that I am fan of Japan 😀

Looking forward to AnimeCon next year with great anticipation!

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-2

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-2

Well yeah. Day -2 was actually yesterday, but I got the pics today only so I would be writing about it today. Yesterday I went with my friend, so it was more fun 🙂

We attended the game character designing workshop by Chris Solarski. It was actually part of the two installments, where he told us his process of designing game characters. The workshop was based on his famous book – Drawing Basics and Video Game Art: Classic to Cutting Edge Art Techniques for Winning Video Game Design. Chris actually takes inspiration from and combines techniques of classical arts with technology. Most importantly, he showed us how shapes affect the mentality of people and how cunningly, designers use it everywhere. He also told us the importance of volume while drawing.

Now this workshop was in the real sense a workshop because Chris took us through some exercises where he made us to follow the process he follows. We were provided with the sketch books, pencils, erasers and sharpeners sponsored by Pro Helvetia (Liasion office of the Swiss Arts Council in India). It was a good experience to go through the steps a pro follows.

Umm…. ok. This workshop went on longer than expected, so we kind of, missed a lot of talks. After this one, we directly attended the Panel Discussion on Future of Anime, Manga and Video Games business in India by Jiro Ishii san, Hiroaki Matsuura san and Mihara Ryotaro san which I have discussed in my earlier post. Other than this, we mostly went around buying manga and other merchandise again and awwing over the freebies I got with my Otaku Fan pass for the convention.

In the end, we attended the workshop by MEGA where he gave a talk over his history with illustrations and designing. It was quite similar to what he had presented in his workshop before.

Thus, came to an end, another fun filled day with a lot of lessons and a lot of inspiration from great people.

P.S.: I am going to post about the 3rd day tomorrow. With that, I have got a little interview I did with one of the member of organizers’ team which I’ll be posting very soon (otherwise I’ll forget what all she said, coz even after jotting down a lot of things remain in mind only). And also, a post is coming on what all anime fans who were in Delhi but didn’t go, missed out there and what could be better. Seems this week is busy after all!

Discussion: Future of Anime and Video Games in India – Key Takeaways

Discussion: Future of Anime and Video Games in India – Key Takeaways

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-2. There was an interesting panel discussion by Jiro Ishii san, the game designer and director of acclaimed games like 999, 428: In a Blockaded Shibuya etc.; Hiroaki Matsuura san, the President; and CEO of Sanzigen and Mihara Ryotaro san, Senior Visiting Researcher of Keio Research Institute at SFC and Lecturer of School of Global Japanese Studies at Meiji University on the future of Japanese Anime and Video Games in India.

The discussion went on for about an hour, where Matsuura san basically discussed his expectations of India and his future plans, Ishii san told about his thoughts as a Japanese and Mihara san shared his perspective on general trend of anime, manga and video games throughout the world. It was supposed to be more business related but ultimately it came to general discussion.

Key Takeaways from the discussion are as follows:

1. According to Mihara san, Internet has a huge impact over anime and manga business. Since there is a lot of piracy and all, merchandising things is one of the ways to reduce the piracy and increase business.

2. Matsuura san said that he is very open minded about business practices in various countries and understands that there would be cultural and other differences everywhere. He is also very interested in knowing the animation practices from India (I so wish I had known about it) and other countries.

3.  Matsuura san also shared that he has been in talks with US animation companies for doing collaborations in future. US companies are also investing in the Japanese anime business. He also wished that Indians would also come forward to invest in anime ventures.

4. On being asked about less popularity of visual novel games outside Japan, Jiro Ishii san mentioned the cost and difficulty in translating the text to English as the main reasons.

5. On future projects to cater western audience specifically, Ishii san told that he is always trying to level up, working hard in making the content universal. According to him, gaming is already a globalized concept. He is also of the opinion that Indian landscape is close to the landscape of Japan (Yay!) 20-30 years back (Ouch! It hurts! But it’s not incorrect either…..)

Audience was also given a chance to ask questions from the panel.

1. Jiro Ishii san was asked if the Under The Dog would be able break the recent recycling of concepts of anime. He said that this project was a deliberate effort, so that the superficial team might beat the “army”.

2. On being asked about the lack of Live Actions (Ok, I am pretty sure, the guy who asked the question, didn’t watch Japanese dramas), Jiro Ishii san stated the big success of recent Rurouni Kenshin movie. He also said that many manga and anime fans are entering the film and drama industry, so there has been an increase in live action projects in last couple of years. He also showed concerns about publishers from famous manga publishing houses and magazines like Shueisha and Shounen Jump not being very enthusiastic about live action adaptations of manga they publish.

3. On the major question of 3D animes in the future, Matsuura san said that there is lot of potential out there for 3D, but 2D and 3D are nothing more than tools. In near future, 3D might be dominating the anime industry though.

In final comments, Mihara san expressed his pleasure to be present there and he also showed curiosity about the future of anime and manga in India. Matsuura san requested everybody to buy authentic merchandise than pirated ones. He said that he would like to see if Indians are willing to buy their products and if India provides a good market for their stuff or not.

In the end Ishii san called every fan of anime, manga and video games a “Cultural Elite” (a little jokingly) because we chose to follow Japanese culture. He also said that he would work hard to take everything at global level but it’s up to us, the cultural elites as well, to help them.

In summary, they all were very positive about the future of anime, manga and video games in India, but they did show their apprehensions about people switching to buy the authentic stuff.

PS – I’ll post the pics and reviews of 2nd day in my next post. I had jotted down the key points from this talk, so I had to share this with everyone in a separate post (^_^)

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-1

AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi, Day-1

Yes, yes, yes!! Another anime festival, this time in India itself, that too New Delhi! And I got to meet some real legends there! I was waiting for this day from, I don’t know how much time. And day 1 itself was successful (●^o^●)

The day started with two sweaty guys in scorching heat, wrapping entry bands to the wrists of excited people (Ok, that was…….unexpected).

Inside, the preparations were still going on and the workshops got delayed a little.

The first workshop was a talk by popular illustrator from France – MEGA. He is such a sweet guy. The two lessons he taught us through his experiences are – Be Passionate and Be Humble. Also, one can easily tell from the content of a speaker, how much research has the person done, and man, to keep his audience engaged, he took Indian examples. Might be that Sachin Tendulkar is famous across the world, but anyway, his talk was entertaining.

On the top of that, he critiqued all the people’s work there. Not once he discouraged anyone. He is probably going to be busy tomorrow giving advice again to the works of people. He didn’t hesitate to provide his gmail address too. I am gonna add him on g+. And Gosh! There are so many talented people out there (not that I didn’t know that before)

MEGA, AnimeCon 2014, New Delhi

So where was I? Yeah, next workshop was works of Daizen Komatsuda himself. We were basically shown a clip of Kill la Kill and then how storyboard is drawn, how parts are animated from keyframes and all. He started by saying a few words in Hindi!! Interesting session! Then came questions and answers. I went to take autograph, but before that, Mr. Jiro Ishii caught my eyes.

I was asked by a friend of mine to get his autograph too. Thank God, I did some research beforehand. He asked me if I really knew who he was and I shouldn’t take his autograph but Mr. Daizen Komatsuda’s. I did, for once give up and went to the line where people were standing to ask  Daizen Komatsuda san questions. But I again went to him. He again asked, “Me?”, this time in English. (I died of cuteness overload there (✖‿✖)) Then he questioned me if I knew his the most famous game. He signed it accordingly. And then photo! Yay!

As jolly as Jiro Ishii san looked, Daizen Komatsuda san seemed to be as conservative. I wish I knew who the third person was with them, I would’ve taken his autograph too. They were taking our pics in their cams too. Hope they keep mine one forever. Somehow, I was the first person to ask for the sign of everybody there. Daizen Komatsuda san started drawing my character with his pen. For the first 15 seconds I couldn’t even make what he was doing. But then people around started praising him and all and I got to know what he was actually doing. Then we took photos and yes, I bought a lot of manga for my friends.

In the end, before I left, the last talk I attended was on very intriguing topic – Garo magazine by Dr. Ryan Holmberg. This one needs some elaboration actually. Dr. Ryan talked about Garo’s birth and recent demise and touched upon the history of manga, especially the ones which were more related to life in Japan and such.

The whole environment is good and the volunteers are very helpful. Indian animecon hasn’t grown to that level yet that there are a lot of stalls or a lot of things related to Japanese culture are there. But for a person who has never seen a manga in real life (read: most of the Indian manga fans before the introduction of translated manga by e-tailers recently), it is indeed a heaven of three days.

I was actually expecting a little more in terms of food and all, but given that they’re organizing it for the fifth time only, and I haven’t attended the last ones and The tickets are pretty reasonable and the guests, (I don’t think, you can get a better lot than that. It’s a huge achievement!), I don’t want to complain. There are still two days left, so hopefully, it improves a bit.

With that, looking forward to next two days……….

PS – Ok, I just realized that the pics are too big in size. For now, please bear with me. I’ll upload the smaller print as soon as possible.

Why Anime Are Not For Kids Only 1: The Creators’ Mind

Why Anime Are Not For Kids Only 1: The Creators’ Mind

Being a hardcore anime and manga fan, I come across such masterpieces, every now and then, which make me realize the real nature of human beings – selfish and greedy.

But nowadays, I’ve started seeing this element too often. Of course, these form of entertainment are not bound by any chains. And to a lot of people, the authors and artists seem to be geniuses who can think outside of the world.

When I set down to think deeply on the themes, I shudder at the mere thought that these thinkers are human beings after all. If they can think of such things, so can other humans. What if these things really exist – the secret operations, the specially powered human beings, their exploitation by various governments or particular individuals – may be we are just unaware of things – “We” the foolish common man.

Sometimes, I can’t help but admire these creators. Is it just imagination? Do they draw inspiration from history? Or do they see future? What if they are a part of all this but want to free themselves from the shackles of despair this exploitation brings the people? The medium becomes the pens and brushes and computers and tablets.

With the technological advancement and the change in humans I observe around, I don’t think the futuristic earth is far away which is created in these creations. The bigger question is what we will do if that happens….

All these thought provoking things, I learn from anime and manga. And then people say that they are mere cartoons meant for children. I can’t help but laugh at their ignorance.
