Anime Recommendation: Gingitsune (ぎんぎつね)

Anime Recommendation: Gingitsune (ぎんぎつね)

I am a biiiiiig slice of life fan. Ah! If they hadn’t been there, what would have I done in my life. Apart from hilarious k-variety shows like Weekly Idol,  slice of life anime are my go-to when I feel down. (I am pretty sure, most of the upcoming reviews are gonna be slice of life)

Gingitsune

And again, as I said in my last post, this particular genre is quite underrated. People new to anime, either think of it as an anime or dismiss it as something mundane or unwatchable. Hence, some awesome shows go unnoticed and unappreciated. One such gem is this show called Gingitsune.

Plot: Makoto Saeki’s mother died when she was four years old. She inherits a power from her mom called “the sight” which enables her to see shrine spirits. One such spirit is Gintaro, who has been guardian of their shrine. After her mother’s death, her father takes up the job of shrine priest and thus, her life starts with this fox spirit. The story begins with Makoto entering the middle school. It’s about her daily life with new friends, both human and shrine spirits and how she evolves as a human being (the common theme).

There are some loose ends here and there which could’ve developed more. But you can’t expect much in 12 episodes. Even so, the speciality of slice of life anime is that they end at pretty okay point where you don’t really feel the need to know more. Pretty self-contained they are.

Animation: Animation and character designs are pretty good. Many consider the designing style of the shrine heralds quite unique. But frankly speaking, I like the human characters more. The main character Gintaro is sometimes shown with unusually big hands or clumsy tail and such. But all in all, it’s pretty good. Not to mentions the backgrounds. They just melt my heart and feel so peaceful. (I keep adding these to my desktop wallpaper slideshow)Gingitsune 5Gingitsune 4

Gingitsune 3
Gimme peace!

Characters: Makoto’s character is quite likable. Being a motherless child, she has her flaws. But growing up with her loving, at times silly, but almost always intelligent father, she is really caring towards others. Also, she strives to strike a balance between the heralds and human beings.

Whereas, Gintaro is the mature and experienced fox, who guards Makoto and loves her very much. He tries to be hard on her to teach her about life, but can’t bear her tears, hence has to concede most of the times. He is the most knowledgeable but acts childish every so often.

There is such contrast of personalities in almost all the characters in the anime which is quite enjoyable, seeing the two opposite sides in one human being.

Gingitsune 7

Other characters are introduced one by one, slowly, which is, again, a plus point. The quiet, know-it-all yet lacking in knowledge of everyday behaviour Kamio Satoru; the old in age but kid at heart Kamio shrine herald, Haru; arrogant yet kind Yumi Ikegami and the one who makes a 180 degree reversal in her behaviour, Hiwako Funabashi are some of the characters who make Makoto’s friend circle and the plot of the anime.

Other things: Soundtracks are pretty relaxing and go well with the anime. I really love the opening and the ending. And as usual, the anime is full of feels (I know, I know. My choices are good, at least, when it comes to anime)

Summary: All in all, I’ll score it a 9/10. And my final verdict is, recommended, not highly, but if you’re looking for slow pace, peaceful story and easy going characters, go for it! And, here we are with the PV next:

PS: This anime season, there are so many slice of life series, and their first episodes so look promising. I am so very excited!!! Will write about them when they finish, but from first impressions, I am going to follow Shounen Maid, Tanaka-kun wa itsumo kedaruge, Anne Happy, Flying Witch and Kuma Miko from Slice of Life list. Some more series are coming up, will add after watching them.

Anime Recommendation: Barakamon (ばらかもん)

Anime Recommendation: Barakamon (ばらかもん)

Recently, I have been in contact with lots and lots of people, thanks to my higher studies preparation. And this one anime, I have been suggesting to everyone and by everyone, I mean every single person, even those who have only Death Note to their “completed” list. And boy! It has worked wonders!

Wonders for everyone
Wonders for everyone

Before I write the review of this anime, I welcome all the “converts” to the anime world. Hope you stay here for long and discover the charms of this place. Now, let’s get started.

Plot: Handa Seishuu is the 23 years old son of a famous calligrapher and is trying to make a name for himself in the calligraphy world. In an exhibition, he loses control and punches a prominent personality just because the old man critiques his piece a little harshly calling it “too conformist” and “unoriginal”. He’s then, kind of banished, to a small village called Goto island where he is given the title of Sensei.

Barakamon: The fateful punch
 The fateful punch! Ouch!

How this city boy adapts to the village life, comes out of his slump, finds his inspiration and succeeds is the plot of the anime. It’s about the daily life of Seishuu and his interactions with the villagers and how they knowingly or unknowingly help him see the world from a different perspective.

Now, it’s a 4-koma gag kind of thing, not exactly like that though. Most of the episodes contain two stories but the plot still flows, so you can’t randomly pick any episode like Nichijou or Azumanga Daioh. There are only 12 episodes and it ends on a great note.

Barakamon: The feeling at the end
The feeling at the end

Characters: Since, the plot is about how Seishuu evolves into a kind hearted, original human being from an arrogant and narcissist calligrapher, there is no doubt, his character sees the most development. He also shows the most emotions and brings about different reactions from the audiences at different points of time: He’s disgusting when he punches the director, lovable when he decides to be Naru’s guardian in secret, pitiful when he loses a prestigious competition to a guy much younger than him and…… Shhhh…… won’t give any more spoilers.

Barakamon: Funny Hiiro's mom
Yes, he does!

The other main character of the series is Kotoishi Naru, a seven year old girl, who lives with her grandpa in the village and has made her base in Seishuu’s house to be, with her other friends. She is the person who sticks to him like glue and turns every situation into hilarious one. The most comic part of the series. Also, she’s supposed to be the lonely child in the absence of her parents and her grandpa always at work, hence she spends the time with her friends and Seishuu. She actually puts efforts to appease him  and is the only one who has the might to handle the moody Sensei. And her voice actress has done a fabulous job.

Oh, that little hint
Oh, that little hint! *Makes a mental note*

The other recurring characters are the kids around Naru: Hina the best friend, Tama and Miwa the middle schoolers, Hiiro the high schooler, and other kids from Naru’s school; the old villagers: Naru’s grandpa, the shop manager, village chief, etc. etc.; Sensei’s family and friends: Kawafuji the art dealer, Mom, Dad, Hall director the punched man, are a few from the list. Many a times, giving importance to these many characters in an anime spoils the broth. But the blend created here is just something magical. (I understand that I am praising the series a little too highly, but when a series still makes you laugh, even after watching it for 20 times, either there is something wrong with you or the series is a gem. The feedback I have got for this one, even from the people who run away from anime, shows it to be the latter case, though I won’t deny the former one.)

Animation: Not very clean but not very messy either. The type of drawings used for this one go well with the theme of the anime. And,

Barakamon: Let's just not forget about the beautiful scenaries
Let’s just not forget about the beautiful scenes

Other things: Soundtracks are plain entertaining. Full of feels too. And it has that calming effect, which can only be felt if you actually watch it. Might be inspiring for some as well, because, it’s all about finding yourself and friendships.

Summary: This anime has got the most simplistic and realistic settings but pulls the job of entertaining the people incredibly with right emotions at right time, so much that people forget about the hi-fi anime they have watched, if any. The pleasing to eyes animation and awesome soundtracks in the background complement it so well, that if I am to score it, I would give it 100 out of 10 (yup, you read that right). And for those who find themselves in depression, try it just once. Take from me, you won’t be disappointed.

If yer making gloom fumes too
If yer makin’ gloom fumes too
Barakamon: Just leave it to this anime
Just leave it to this anime

Now that I read the whole write-up, I think, I have praised it a little too much. But you know, it deserves it. A lot of anime lovers haven’t watched it yet which amuses as well as worries me a lot. When otakus around me say that they haven’t watched the series, my reaction is always

Barakamon: What
What!

And I realize, despite high ratings on MAL, it might be one of the most underrated anime in the real life. It’s just an observation though. So if you haven’t watched it yet, please do. The anime is available on YouTube as well, English subbed. Here is a trailer for ya:

Enjoy!

First Translation From Japanese

First Translation From Japanese

Hello all,

It’s been a long time, like reeeeally long time. But, this is to say, I am not dead XD

Anyway, I have been trying to keep myself busy these days (now that it’s been close to four months that I have been without a job 😐 and my application period is over as of now, hopefully), so apart from regular WaniKani reviews, I decided to take up translating manga. Now, it’s really easy to find raws online, I have done some chapters, one even for a scanlation group and it’s been really satisfying experience, honestly.

Although, somehow, I ended up taking up a Josei manga, which had almost no furigana with the kanji, but it was really fun. It was first in a long time that I worked day and night on something. And the appreciation I got from the community of readers, it was really a great feeling. My knowledge is helping people appraise someone else’s work. And I can immerse myself in something I love without a care in the world and forget everything else! (For now)

Moreover, I got to learn a lot. Like, if I say language-wise, had I been more diligent in keeping a tab on new things I encountered during the translation, then maybe I would have learnt more. I didn’t do that this time, but I did come to know that WaniKani has been really helpful. What I couldn’t do for five years, I have been able to do in five months. I am actually able to read some of the text in the manga without any help (I will do WaniKani review in the near future, but I am pretty sure that people, who have been learning Japanese for sometime would already be familiar with the platform)

I also came to understand the fact that, us, the normal readers, who just love to enjoy their favorite manga or anime are really at mercy of translators. When you come across raws and their translations side by side, you come to notice the anomaly between the interpretations and sometimes, meaning as well. And Japanese really has the power to throw one in that kind of loop. Also, we take the scanlations for granted. We go to famous sites like mangahere and mangafox and just enjoy the translations. But, it really is a daunting task. And I am just talking about translation here. If I had to clean the Japanese text, then fill it with English, then fonts, proofreading, damn! Hats off to the scanlators!!

PS: Is anyone following Produce101 here? They got five new songs for themselves and I find this one really catchy. Posting here:

Anime Review: Kyoukai no Kanata (境界の彼方)

Anime Review: Kyoukai no Kanata (境界の彼方)

Damn! I had so many reviews written down with me. This one was written in 2014! Let’s just get started….

Literally translating to Beyond the Boundaries, this 12 episode anime is, what you call it, a little different from the league but at the same time, it contains everything a mainstream anime has – romance, action, drama, evil sisters, mysterious outsider, demons, humans, immortals, hidden motives, fetish driven perverts and so on.

From above, one might get an idea that it’s not lacking in anything but to be honest, I felt the story a little rushed and jumbled. I don’t know about the light novels though. Throughout the anime, I had the following feels as well:

Kyoukai No Kanata Mirai
I can watch it! I can watch it!

Plot – Going to the story, Akihito Kanbara is an immortal half demon half human who is obsessed with girls with glasses. When he sees one on the top of his school’s roof, he goes to save her, and instead gets stabbed (That was totally weird imo). The bespectacled beauty, as he calls the girl, Mirai Kuriyama is a demon hunter who is from a cursed clan which used to use blood manipulation. She uses her blood to form her sword but is afraid to face the demons or dreamshades as they call them in the anime.

Kyoukai No Kanata Getting Stabbed
                                            Ouch!

Being the selfless guy, Akihito helps her in overcoming her past and fears and make friends. In the due course the real nature of the half shade residing in Akihito comes out as well the hidden motives of Nases, the governing family of spirits and spirit hunters in the area and the Spirit Hunters’ Association.

Ah, yes, the spirit hunters. They are the people who have special powers to see and kill the shades and they earn money through them. In the end it is revealed that shades are nothing but manifestations of negative emotions of human beings. (Well, well, no surprises there, it’s been shown in a looot of series after all)

Since the setting is high school, there is no doubt that there’re powerful side characters as well. But:

Kyoukai No Kanata 1
The mystery….. is still a mystery

Analysis – Ultimately, it is one of those victory of good over evil anime and I am literally tired of writing the same thing. I like that the negative emotions of human beings can give birth to such a thing as demons, this element is my favorite actually though. And the emotions in the anime are far more overwhelming than the real life. So, I don’t remember if I laughed or not, it definitely made me spill my tears a li’l bit.

Kyoukai No Kanata 2
Damn! How do they make this? Such beauty…. It’s making                                            my eyes………

There is an element of women empowerment as well, as you generally don’t see a girl as the one doing the action in such kind of series.

Other things – Art and animation are amazing. Reminds one of Hyouka, Tamako Market and K-on!, if you’ve watched any out of those. It’s Kyoto Animation after all.

Plot, again, okayish, a little confusing and with lots of loose ends, but would do. Hopefully, they did tie them in the subsequent movies, I couldn’t muster up the courage to watch them though. I didn’t want to be disappointed again with the ending and plunge myself into all the drama this anime presents. I mean, it’s okay for one time watch, but I had watched it in 2014. The movies aired in 2015. Including subs and all, it would have been minimum August at least, when I would watch the movie. Sorry, not that much patience. (I did wait for Tamako Market’s movie, checking everyday if the subbed movie had come out or not XD)

Music, suits to the series, no complaints there.

Kyoukai No Kanata Night Scene
I ended up choosing the beautiful scenes after all!

So, here it is. Again it’s a review because I don’t particularly recommend it to everybody. If the elements seem interesting to you or you’re into demons and stuff, then you can definitely take up the series, or you can watch it just for the animation sake, because it’s beautiful, just drop dead gorgeous! (I ended up choosing the sparkly natural scenes rather than characters to insert into the post >.<) All in all, I’ll give this anime 7/10, the plot doesn’t contribute to it though.

Drama Review: Sunshine Girl (자체발광 그녀)

Drama Review: Sunshine Girl (자체발광 그녀)

I think most of the K-drama lovers would agree with me, all rom com dramas follow a set pattern: out of the MCs, one would be rich (either son/ daughter of a business giant or a celebrity) and one would be totally destitute. First 8-9 episodes go into developing the plot, their meeting and their bickering. These episodes generally bring the comedy element but at the end, start getting serious. 9-14 episodes are full of drama, all the tears and such happen in these episodes. And the cause is generally the same: a disapproving nagging mom/ dad or other family member or another love interest. 15 onwards is the happy ending. The MCs either end up resolving the conflict with their family or any one else involved or running away, giving a sense of gratification to the viewers.

This drama does none of them. There is a lot of hurt as usual but since the number of episodes is just 12, it doesn’t give much chance to develop the tear jerking drama. Although, the story starts with the MC resigning from her job (and reminds me of my days, a lot).

So Yi Hyun

Plot: Also called Glowing She, the story goes like this. Jun Ji Hyun (So Yi Hyun) always gets her work stolen by her boss. She decides to work hard on an upcoming proposal and not tell her boss about it. When the time comes for actual presentation, she finds that she has been cut from the presentation itself by her boss yet again. She ends up quarrelling and throwing ice on her boss (you go girl!) and quitting the job to fulfil her life long dream of becoming a writer for education channel. Her new boss is a PD whom she had dated for 5 years in the past, No Young-Woo (Park Kwang-Hyun). No Young Woo broke up with her and married her best friend, divorcing that girl too, 2 years later. He tells Jun Ji Hyun straightforwardly that she is not fit for showbiz and he’ll make it a point to make her life hell teaching her about this dirty business. She is assigned to bring Kang Min (Kim Hyung Joon), a narcissist hallyu star who has a phobia of singing live, to PD No’s new programme, which she is able to do successfully but circumstances lead her to resign yet again. Her 31 years of age doesn’t help her either. She still persists through her optimism but yet fails in her endeavours.

After all this mess, Ji Hyun keeps getting involved with the two guys. Her relationship with her best friend also keeps dwindling. In the end, who she ends up with and whether she is able to reach her dream are two main questions.

*Spoiler* It’s an open ended drama, you won’t know who she ends up with. So watch if only you can bear a little disappointing ending *Spoiler*

Sunshine Girl Relationship Chart

Characters: While I love all the three main characters, there is not much actual development. The relationship between Ji Hyun, her best friend and PD No has been portrayed well, I don’t know if people forgive each other like this in real life. Also, the friendship between Ji Hyun and her female friends is something to be jealous and at the same time proud of. But again, Kang Min’s past, Ji Hyun’s family and many other things are, kind of, all over the place.

I personally identify with Ji Hyun and her best friend a lot, and I am sure many others will too. I really love Ji Hyun’s guts (I mean, despite giving her best, she doesn’t get what she deserves. At the age of 31, she starts over. Who would do that?). The most impressive thing is, the show brings out the problems in show biz well, especially in the context of South Korea. How a small mistake makes people lose their jobs at lower levels and how upper levels remain untouched. How much managers work and use dirty tricks to keep their idols popular and how, many a times, idols have to have their feelings trampled over. How their small secrets can be fatal to their career and how it impacts normal people around them.

All in all, I’ll give this drama a 6/10. It’s one of those love stories, where you don’t need to use your mind. It just goes on because there is not much complexity. Acting is all good and you’ll laugh your ass off on Ji Hyun’s curses (she looks so authentic mumbling and cursing XD). As I said earlier, the ending might disappoint some a little. But if you’re looking for a rather short story you can definitely watch this.

The drama I am talking about is different from Taiwanese drama of the same name.

It’s available on youtube on this channel: sunshinejunnie (I don’t own anything here) Hopefully they don’t remove it.

More Digital Drawings, DeviantArt Account and Happy New Year

I have decided to move all my drawings to DeviantArt. I find DA a great platform to upload my art, maintain a track of them and properly get motivated to improve myself.

About the characters for last two seniors, they are as follows:

and

(I am still learning about embedding flash content in wp, kindly excuse me if you’re unable to open the links in the above images)

These are based on second and fourth seniors of mine from this post: My Seniors Can’t Be This Cute

The main point for the girl here is her puppy eyes and tomboy look (although she totally changed after going to US with regards to how she used to dress up). For the second character, well, he’s one of the most difficult characters I have ever made. There are less references for such get-up on internet and I think it’s probably the first time anyone has tried to japanimate a Sardaar (I searched and searched but couldn’t find). So, while I could use references here and there for other characters, this one was totally from my imagination and of course, real life pics, which I did consult for everyone.

Moving on to DeviantArt account, it’s like this: I would just update my Fandrawings page and not make exclusive blog posts, like I used to do earlier or have been doing for the past few weeks. It’s also because it’s been really long time since I did any review and I need to write more in that direction. Also, I’ll update other posts to include pictures from DA rather than wp media gallery (slowly, I am very lazy at such things).

Here s link to my DA profile: DeviantArt EastAsianLover

But in the end, I’ll  post the composite picture which I finished as a Christmas project last year (Damn! Last Year?)

Chibi composition

Which reminds me, a very happy new year to all my readers and fellow bloggers!

I will take my leave now and try to think about what all reviews I need to do…..

Another Attempt At Digital Drawing: Chibi Character 3

Another Attempt At Digital Drawing: Chibi Character 3

This time a guy! This is japanimated character of my mentor. As I stated in my previous post, these all characters were to lead to a composition, because I don’t own any pictures of me and my team together 😥 Hence I decided to draw these.

So this guy, anyway shows indifference when getting pics clicked with us. And he is very cool XD I drew this character keeping that in mind. What I am most proud about him is the hairstyle, it exactly mimics how my mentor does his hair. And the aura 😀 He is the third senior from this post of mine: My Seniors Can’t Be This Cute

Another Attempt At Digital Drawing: Chibi Character 2

Another Attempt At Digital Drawing: Chibi Character 2

Next up in the series is me:

Chibi 2

Ok ok, I get it. This looks like a baby. Possibly can’t be me. But in comparison to all the people who are coming next and the previous one, I am like this 😛

This is actually the first character I drew, hence the old style. I won’t be drawing her again, because I like her just like this, sweet, innocent kid 😛 As for the previous one, no matter what I did, I wasn’t satisfied. It took me one whole week to decide upon the new hairstyle and the shading pattern. I need to learn a lot more.

Which reminds me, paint.net is quite a handy tool. Not as equipped as photoshop, obviously, but it has all the basics down. I really like its curve tool. Not that I am in a position to give advices.

Anyway, off to make next character!

Edit: I had to ultimately redraw her as these all characters were to lead to a composition of 5 characters. Not much changes apart from reducing brush size for line art and remodelling the legs to match other characters:

Another Attempt At Digital Drawing: Chibi Character 1

Another Attempt At Digital Drawing: Chibi Character 1

So, I am trying my hands again at digital drawings. Here is what I came up with:

Chibi girl 1

My first character after zillion days (Actually she’s second. I have one more, will post it later). She is based on my first senior from this post: My Seniors Can’t Be This Cute

How? Main highlights are her fringes, her green eyes, cute girlish attire and funky yet kind hearted nature.

Btw, what I realized is, guys are tougher to draw in chibi form than girls, especially hairstyle. There are a lot of areas in which I need to improve. Anyway, I am trying to make many many chibis based on the people in my life, will keep posting!

Edit: I changed the style a little bit and here is the new better (hopefully) version. Shading is still hard 😥

I am in the middle of experimenting with the technique though.
